Looking after your bike

by David Spruce

Looking after your bike isn't about being anally retentive and wanting everything to be immaculate, it is about keeping it in the best working order for your own benefit. Dirt and wear and tear will prevent your bike from working properly and you will get less out of it. Whatever kind of bike you have - whether it's a road bike, mountain bike or a hybrid - you should try and take care of it as well as you can.

A clean bike is likely to function better, with smoother gear changes and reduced wear and tear. A dirty bike can rust and as various parts wear, you will find it becomes less enjoyable to ride. Keeping your bike clean isn't just about having it look good.

Dry weather minimises the need for cleaning to some degree, but it doesn't negate it - you can still get bits of grit that will do untold damage. How often you clean your bike will depend on how often you use it and what the weather has been like. Mountain bikes generally need cleaning more frequently than road bikes simply because of the conditions they will typically be encountering.

Bikes need lubrication to work properly. In days gone by, people would use oil on the moving parts of a bike, but nowadays special lubricants are made which are less messy and which will also protect the frame of the bike if applied there. Only lubricate your bike once it has been cleaned.

Your bike needs protecting even when it is not in use, so find somewhere secure to store it where it will not be affected by the weather. Many people keep their bikes indoors when they are at home. If you are going to work and there is a bike shed available, make use of it as rain will have a negative on what is, after all, a very valuable possession.
