Shutterbug's Essential Guide To Better Photography Skills

by Brett Finn Sanchez

A great hobby to take up is photography. However, you do need some information and determination in order to do it properly. Read this article to get some new ideas and learn the basics of photography.

Play with the concepts of scale, expressions, and perspective in your photographs. Any simple subject can be transformed into something artistic when it is used in a funny, unique way, or made to look much smaller or much bigger than it is. Spend some time on your images so that you can shoot a distinct image of an otherwise ordinary object.

When taking group photos of couples, families or larger groups, give them advice on the best type of clothing to wear in the photoraph. It's not necessary for them to wear colors that match exactly, but it will look much better in the final picture if they are wearing complementary hues. Recommend warm colors or neutral shades, as they go well with natural surroundings. If your subjects want to wear bright colors, suggest that they also include some black pieces so their attire is not too overwhelming.

In terms of great photography tips you can use, here is one that's very underrated. Make sure you understand the significance of shutter speeds. The shutter speed settings you will find on your camera are: P,M,A & S. "P" indicates the program setting. This is the fully automatic setting of your camera, and it sets the aperture and shutter speed automatically for you. Use this setting whenever you are unsure of what it is you will be photographing.

Consult your camera's instruction manual and learn how to use its focus-lock feature. Usually cameras automatically focus on the middle of the frame, leaving an off-center subject out of focus unless you manually tell the camera where to focus. You can do this by pressing the shoot button with the subject of the shot in the center and then moving the camera until you have found your picture. The camera will take the picture when you push the shutter button all the way down.

Consider getting a case for your camera, as well as for other equipment you carry with you when taking pictures. Some of the worst cases of equipment failure come from the simple act of failing to protect the camera and accessories. A variety of cases will be available in camera or electronics stores.

*+If you are traveling and notice a place that is perfect to photograph, note the location so you can easily come back at a later time with the proper equipment. Carry along a memo pad to jot down the location of places you want to come to again.

Many shots that you take won't ever end up in a picture frame, but that doesn't mean you should throw them away. Keeping a record of your body of work, not just your best work, is a good way to improve your photography skills.

In order to produce great photographs in low light setting, you need to decrease the aperture, or the f/stop setting on your camera. By doing this, as much light a possible will be able to enter your camera lens. This will create a clearer photograph.

The truth is, photography requires effort and research to get really good results. Some of the information you just learned will help you shoot a better photo today, while other parts will need some practice. Regardless of how much effort you have to put forth to improve your photography skills, remember to have fun while taking photographs. There's no point to learning the art of photography if it becomes work instead of an enjoyable hobby. Keep the advice in this article in mind to achieve photography success.

This technique works well for portraiture-style shots or any setting in which the subject is in close proximity to the camera.
