Wanna try real fishing? Take up Fly Fishing

by Andy Craven

From time long ago people have been fishing to find food. In more modern times it became a sport and like most sports we improved and improved until now Fly fishing takes great skill if you want to be the best.

There is a huge difference between fly fishing and other forms of fishing. In other fishing styles you use lures or even live bait to catch the fish but when fly fishing you use a fly that looks just like a real insect, the very insect they usually feed on. You mimic the natural movement of the fly using a much longer line. This allows you to imitate the natural movement of the fly as it travels across the surface of the water. The aim is to fool the fish in to believing it is a real fly.

Fly fishing has a constant cast. You cast the fly and then pull it back a number of times to imitate a fly landing and taking off again. In other forms of fishing you cast out and let it rest until a fish takes your bait.

It has to be said that all types of fishing offer great rewards and satisfaction but fly fishing seems somehow closer to nature.

While other forms of fishing use man made materials your seasoned fly fisherman will use only natural materials. They do this as they say a fish is more likely to take it from something made naturally. That's part of the attraction to fly fishing.

Coarse fishing has many places to fish from local ponds to rivers but when fly fishing you need to go where most of the fish are, which may mean traveling to where trout and walleye live. The real skill is to fool the fish in to thinking it is a real fly on the surface and that takes skill and experience.

There are some wonderful places to fly fish and frankly they are all over the World. Canada, Alaska, South America, Russia and even Mexico. You have to admit that beats your local pond every time, wouldn't you say?

As Chess is often said to be "The King of Sports" it is also often said that fly fishing could make the same boast. Try it, you'll fall in love, hook, line and fly! Corny, I know! I'm an angler not a comedian!
