How To Build A Better Photography Portfolio

by Dorsey T. Emanus

Photography is a good way to showcase the beauty in both your life as well as the world you live in. If you are really awesome at photography, you can even make some nice money snapping photos. When you learn your camera's settings, the effects of various features and lighting, you will be able to produce interesting photographs.

Framing is very important when composing your shot. Make sure to zoom in on the focus of the picture, and keep distracting elements out of the picture. This will help keep clutter out of your pictures, and eliminate any unwanted focal points.

Understand how sharpness is distributed across your camera's image sensor. In general, sharpness will manifest itself mostly towards the center of the lens, as well as center of the image. It then begins to distort as it approaches the outside edges of the frame of your camera.

Field depth is a critical feature when shooting landscapes. An object in the foreground of your shot can create the illusion of depth by providing scale. To gain sharper images, adjust your aperture to a smaller setting; try f/16 for full-frame single lens reflex cameras and f/8 for the more standard digital ones.

The process of taking excellent pictures is no mystery. Get more experience by continuing to take pictures. With a digital camera, you don't have to keep all of your test shots; only keep the ones that you like and will look at again later. Your photography skills will improve and as you later review them, you will see what you need to do to take even better pictures.

People often believe that bright, sunny days are perfect for taking pictures. However, you are almost guaranteed to get flawed images if you take your shots in the direct glare of the sun. The sun will cast shadows and cause glaring. It will also make uneven highlights on your photos, and will make your subjects squint when looking in the camera. If you can, try late evening or early morning lighting to shoot in when outside.

There are many different techniques and nostalgic concepts that come along with film photography, if you would like to give this challenge a try, buy a film camera to start your analog journey. Consider purchasing black and white film that has an ISO of 200 to create especially dramatic pictures. After your pictures have been developed you should have prints made on different types of paper, including those that are made of fiber.

The most important thing, however, is to practice your photography skills on a regular basis. Due to digital photography, many people have felt a little less threatened about attempting photography. You can take as many photos as you want without worrying about wasting film and the cost of developing it. This allows you to learn from what you do right, as well as from your mistakes.

There are cases that you can purchase to protect your camera and lenses; this is a recommended purchase. Often, damage or destruction of equipment could have easily been avoided if the owner had their equipment secured in a protective case. You can find a protective case in an electronics store or any place that also has cameras for sale.

The key to a great picture is knowing what scenes and environments require flash or not. A flash is not appropriate for all shooting conditions. A lot of light can sometimes ruin great photographs. You should also make sure you are turning it on when you are experiencing a low light shot.

Now that you are familiar with the ins and outs of photography, you can go out there and put your skills to use. You may, one day, be among the greatest of photographers the world has ever seen.
