Concerned About Parenting? Learn More In This Article

by Steve Jones

There is no right or wrong way to parent your child. Parenting has many aspects and many of them, you start to learn as your child grows. The key to properly parenting your child is researching and connecting with other like-minded adults who have children. Read the tips below to help you shed some insight on different approaches to parenting.

Many parents of twins purchase multiple cribs when they are putting together the nursery only to find out that their babies want to sleep together. Don't buy two cribs until after you have had the babies. Some babies however will never be able to fall asleep if in the same crib. Find out which type of children you have before making the investment in a new crib. If you do want to buy it early, make sure they have a good return policy just in case.

When raising teenagers, it may seem as if you are always focusing on the negative things they do. It is important to take some time out and praise them for some of their positive accomplishments. If all they hear is negative, it pushes them down, try some positive reinforcement; you will like the results you get from your teen.

When you have small children it is important to anchor all large furniture to the wall. Shelves, dressers, and armoires all pose serious tipping hazards. Small children can easily cause the furniture to tip over and be trapped or seriously injured when trying to reach for a book on a high shelf or climb up to get a toy.

While listening skills are important in so many areas of your life, they may be most important in parenting. Always listen to your children. Even though they are developing, even though their vocabulary is limited, your kids are trying as hard as they can to communicate with you. Pay attention when they do, and do your best to understand what really matters to your children.

To strengthen the bond between you and your child, and to help enhance their cognitive development, turn off the television! Limit their tv watching to special occasions - children who spend very little time watching tv are more socially competent, more academically competent, and more creative and imaginative than their television-watching peers.

Granting an allowance for tasks completed is a tried-and-true parenting tip to keep in your back pocket at all times. Younger people in today's modern world are obviously losing their work ethic. So as a parent, to instill that work ethic in your child, refrain from just giving money and make sure that they're earning it.

If you have two or more children in the house, enlist the help of older siblings to care for the younger ones. Older siblings can help with playtime and can even monitor bath times (depending on their age). If you have a teenager and a young child, you might also be able to benefit from lower cost babysitting and teach your older child some responsibility in the process.

For a fun road-trip treat for your toddler, paint an old cake pan or cookie sheet with chalkboard paint and provide a piece of sidewalk chalk (or regular chalk, if your child is past the age where she might put it in her mouth). You can also glue a picture onto a large magnet and then cut it into several large pieces, making a great puzzle that your child can assemble on the pan.

If your child is afraid of going to bed alone, do not encourage them to come and lie in the bed with you. Make sure that they sleep in their own beds and reassure them that they are safe. You can even assign one of their stuffed animals to be a "bodyguard."

To keep your children safe, which includes in their own home, have a friend do a walk through of your home and determine if it is child ready so to speak. Because you are familiar with your home and see it everyday you may ignore the obvious, and it may be a huge hazard to your child.

To reduce stress when flying with children ask the gate attendant if they offer early boarding for families. If they don't, ask if you can board early. This will allow you to secure your children in their seats ahead of time and it will also make it easier to find a storage compartment for your carry-on baggage.

Make sure not to do your child's homework for them. It can be tempting to give a child the correct answer to a question that should be easy, but they won't ever learn if they don't arrive at the answer by their own merit. Try to guide them gently toward discovering an answer instead.

If your child has been making frequent trips to the school nurse, only to be sent back because there is no apparent illness, he or she may be trying to avoid a classroom bully. Ask your child if he or she is having problems with a classmate; you can also directly contact your child's teacher to determine whether there may be a troublesome conflict between another student and your child.

A newborn baby is not manipulating you when it cries. While some will give you well-intended advice that responding to a baby's cries is not a good habit to get into, a baby is crying because it has no other way of expressing that it needs food, changing, or even a cuddle. A baby's cries should never be ignored.

Never assume that your children will just "learn it at school". If your children learn about drugs, sex, and alcohol at school, they will not be learning them with your morals in mind. This will also teach your children that you are not the person to turn to when they are faced with important life issues. Your children will be more likely to engage in these behaviors if they do not learn them at home.

As the beginning of this article mentioned, there is no right or wrong way to be a parent to your child. Many parenting skills are learned as your child matures into adulthood. Being open to learning new things is a wonderful way to learn new ways to approach your child. Apply the tips from this article, in order to have a successful go at parenting.
