The stereotype of a dirty, crowded building; couldn't be the furthest from the truth. Modern hostels should be looked at like a combination of a private inn and camping. They offer the intimate feel of an inn and the flexibility of camping. The best feature of this type of arrangement is the price.
If money is a concern, there are hostels that fall into every price range. In most cases the prices are based on if a traveler wants a private room or not. While most facilities are still set up with communal rooms, others have added private rooms for those willing to pay a little bit more.
Travelers can use the community kitchen to cook their meals, and do their own laundry instead of sending it to maid service. Both of these things can save large sums of money during a trip. While talking with new friends, many people find that there are wonderful tips to be had. Most of the people that stay in these places do so on a regular basis and have information that hotel staff do not. If someone is looking for the popular local music or dance club; other guests can point you in the right direction.
Other guests can also let you know where the good free activities are. Many places loan out hiking equipment, bikes and things like canoes. Some facilities also offer free local cuisine tastings and movie nights.
Spending time with new people in new places will create memories of a lifetime. Individuals who love architecture can find some amazing finds while backpacking through a country. Many newer facilities have set up home in old buildings. From trains to closed churches you never know what you are going to find; but whatever it is will be cheap.
