Fencing Rules - Using an Epee, Saber or Foil

by Dan White

Fencing may have originated in Greece and Egypt around 1200 BC, and it has been one of the most elegant events in the history of sports. The rules have been changed over the centuries, but this has only made the sport easier to understand and play and the revisions are mainly responsible for the popularity of the competition as as one of the greatest sports in the world. Fencing is well known in the USA, but many do not understand this game. Almost all the people take their lessons from movies where artists are always jumping and sword-fighting. Some of what they see may be fencing but there is much more to this sophisticated sport, and you will see this once you examine its rules.

Game Play: Fencing rules differ slightly by the weapon that is used but the basic rules always are kept the same. Contestants stand on their respective guard lines and face each other at the outset of the match. The referee signals for the confrontation to start by calling, 'fence' and the match is played until the referee decides to stop the bout by calling 'halt'. The match continues for the stipulated time except if the referee decides to interrupt the bout before the end of this period. The referee can stop the match if he thinks that the game is getting dangerous and also if a competitor is seriously injured or disarmed. The referee can also decide to stop the match on finding that a competitor is hitting instead of touching the other contestant. He must also interrupt the confrontation if a contestant leaves the piste.

Duration: The duration of the matches depends on the number of rounds. During preliminary rounds, confrontations last for 4 minutes or ends if 5 touches are scored in less time. For direct elimination, matches go up to 9 minutes or until 15, touches are scored. These bouts are played in 3 more rounds of three minutes having a break of one minute. For team events, the number of touches don't matter and confrontations are played for 4 minutes or until the match is stopped by the referee.

Scoring: In fencing, a player scores points by touching his weapon to the body of the opponent; it's the type of weapon used that decides the way that points are scored. If the fencer is using an epee, he can get points by touching any part of the contestant's body. In case of using the saber, the valid scoring area is limited to the upper torso in order to score the player need to touch this zone with the tip of the sword. Finally, in case of a foil, points can be scored only by touching the foil to the other contestant's trunk, i.e. below the collar and above the groin.

Fouls: The fencing rules consider that a foul is committed if a player leaves the piste keep off getting touched or if he defends or attacks using his unarmed hand. In both situations, the first foul call is coming with a warning from the referee and the second foul results in a point for the opponent. Failing to obey the arbiter's decision also is considered to be a foul in fencing.
