Helpful Tips For Those Wearing Their First Western Hat

by Paul Budde

A lot of people wearing their first western hat make several bad mistakes. Either keeping your new purchase in the wrong place or temperature can cause terrible damage. Also there are certain etiquette codes to how a cowboy wears his hat which you need to know. Here are a few useful pointers to get you dressing the cowboy way.

When wearing a proper felt cowboy hat you need to look after the material. When you take it off at the end of the day you should pay attention to where and how it is being stored. Generally you want to be placing it on its crown either inside of a hat box or, failing that, on a flat clean surface. Heat will result in shrinkage of the band so make sure to keep it away from high temperatures.

If you see dust collecting upon it use a soft brush to remove it by brushing in a counter clockwise motion. You should also be careful about allowing moisture, perspiration or wetness of any kind get on it. If you do get your hat wet, shake off the excess liquid and then turn down the sweatband to allow it to dry by itself.

Even if it becomes stained, never use a liquid cleaner. Instead brush it down with baby talcum or corn starch. Liquid is always the enemy and will lead to permanent staining. Also don't abuse the crown. Touch that part of the hat as little as possible and handle the brim at front and back to remove it from and place it upon your head.

Cowboy etiquette has a whole list of important rules regarding proper wearing of head gear. Knowing these will make sure you are always wearing it the right way. Performing a hat-tip, the gentle lift of the head gear slightly above your head, is done when greeting a stranger. For politeness' sake, it must only be performed with any cigarette or cigar removed from the mouth.

Removing the hat completely should be done when being introduced, when saying goodbye, when greeting someone you know, when engaging in conversation, when at a funeral or when hearing the National Anthem. It is generally a good rule of thumb to always remove your hat indoors. However, there are exceptions to this rule - like if you in a public building or in the entrance room of a large office or hotel.

A nice western hat is part and parcel of the classic American wardrobe. Take care of it well though. It is an item of clothing which needs plenty of attention.
