This was mostly worn by the upper class of society as it was best showed off as evening wear, which is noted by the tuxedo that is worn in modern society. It is most often manufactured with a silk or satin lining and aided in the comfort necessary of this period.
The 1870s to 1900s saw the introduction of formal coats that ended mid calf in length and evolved into the shorter blazer. The Edwardian period began in the early 1900s and carried many of the earlier fashion elements through today. This meant a straighter, tailored cut with a tighter fit, which added to the comfort as well as the style that was necessary during this period.
