Those Wily Pickerel Trophy Fish

by Chad Albert

No doubt about those Pickerel and Walleye fish are just plain wily smart. Say what you can, but even the dumbest Walleye fish seems to more than intelligent when it comes to evading novice fishing sports enthusiasts. Even then it can be well said that is better to be out on the prowl for those "creatures of the deep" rather than back "at the office" in that hot boring, city. The early bird gets the worm, and that smart aquatic creature of the deep gets your minnows and bait,

Although often referred to in the sporting and hunting books and magazines as a "Walleyed Pike fish" these wild animals that our creator perfected for our angling pleasures is are actuality neither a Walleye nor a Pike fish. Massive specimens can be found in the wilds growing up to and attaining weights of 9 kg. Yet the average size of most landed by fishing folk are in the 1- 3 pound class , with the rank average being 1 kg in size and weight. Yet few of these see it back as pickerel fillets or even the more treasured delicacy of "Pickerel Cheeks. You can bet that these land smack dab, promptly in the middle of a hot frying pan or skillet. Poor fish. It can be said that the smart and the smarter Walleyes get away for the fisherman to come back another fishing day. You would think that the function in life of these "smarter specimens" is to both taunt and torment the most experienced of anglers and fisher people. Yet all in all its no accident of nature that it is not easy to catch Walleye fish and trophy Walleyes .Their reputation is well deserved as an angling fish of merit. Still as a wise and seasoned Lake Winnipeg Icelandic seasoned fisherman used to advise "If you want to catch fish .... you have to think like a fish".

Although Walleye fish have a range across North America - the upper USA, Canada to the deep northern areas of the Canadian provinces of Manitoba and Northwestern Kenora Ontario regions, Walleye as a species have been introduced throughout the world. The fame and notoriety of these master game fish and trophy status has spread worldwide through fish stocking and aquatic husbandry practices and techniques.

Catch one Walleye, odds and experience says that there are plenty of others from the same schooling group just loitering around waiting for you. It is as if they lurk just to tease and taunt you by offering them the freshest of bait or a new shiny bright colored lure or jig. Experienced anglers will teach you that you can count that in the greatest amount of cases that the Walleye and Pickerels hold near the bottom of the lake. All in all the tactics and strategies employed are not unlike those that you would employ when fishing for Goldeye fish. Hence patterns of attack are not unlike those employed in successfully landing trophy sized Goldeyes. When fishing at these depths watch your line (or lines if local fishing and game laws and regulations allow), for any lateral or unusual movements and strip. In these cases simply remove or retrieve your fishing line by hand. It seems that Walleye fish take their food very slowly, thus the hook must be set the very moment and second that a fish takes the fly or it will simply reject it.

In the end it can be said that this valued trophy fish - is a boom, a triumph and a bust. Wonderful to catch, great to eat, yet more than amazingly smart and wily. The reputation of the Walleye or its Canadian namesake - the Pickerel is more than just and well earned.
