Western Collectibles Bring The Past Alive

by Paul Budde

In all of American history, few things capture the imagination quite like the Wild West. Indians and buffalo roaming the wide open plains, cowboys chasing cattle, mountain men exploring where no European had ever gone before. The stories and legends of that time make Western collectibles a very popular bit of Americana.

When some people hear the word collecting, they picture silly statuettes of dogs or children. While there is some of that in this genre, much more involves actual historical items. Others are modern interpretations of life during the main expansion period. Still another area is fiction, both contemporary to the period and more recent, about the heroes, villains and adventures of the time.

Several famous modern sculptors have based their entire careers on the mythology of the cowboy, the stoic Native warrior, or the rambunctious trapper. They create massive statues for public spaces, and often smaller, limited quantities of copies for individuals. Painters and other visual artists often find inspiration in the lives of Indians, ranchers, and wide-ranging wildlife.

Far more interesting than modern interpretations of that time, are those made while it was all happening. Artists traveled from around the world to explore this uncontrolled land. Their sketches, paintings, and even diaries are much sought after. Letters from the frontier, showing daily life, can provide an interesting peek into what it was like to settle so far from home. Even the few local newspapers of the day have their place in some collections.

Others prefer to gather things used by those living then. A cavalry officer's saddle, a cowboy's chaps, or even a simple child's doll. The crafts of daily life include masterful beading, and the pottery jars food was stored in. The history of settling the west offers many mundane pieces to display. Clothing as well as written items, and even children's school books are sought after by someone.

As with many things, an item with provenance has more monetary value. Not every person cares about that, however. Some are interested in piecing together the history of one small place on the map. Others with an exciting event, such as a famous gunfight or train robbery.

Western collectibles allow anyone to own relics from a time that spurred their imagination. A time of adventure, danger, and great opportunity. They can hold in their hand something once owned by their childhood hero, or mirrors their play at frontier life. While the history behind the items can be grim, the dreams they inspired rarely are.
