How Do You Make Soy Candles?

by Melissa Hall

Love soy candles? Do you want to learn how to make them? I will show you how to make soy candles in jars. Soy candles are excellent, unique presents for Christmas, birthdays and other occasions! You can make them in jars, as votives, tea lights, wax melts or even chunk candles. Let's go ahead and start......

What Supplies Do You Need?

A kitchen scale, preferably a digital one

Candy thermometer

A rubber spatula that can withstand high heat for stirring the wax

Metal pour pot

Metal cooking pot

1 pounds Soy Container wax

1 oz candle Fragrance Oil

Candle wax dye for coloring

Two 8oz Mason jars. You can also use other canning jars

2 Candle wicks for soy wax like perhaps HTP 105 or CD-18

Two Wick Stickers to stick the wicks on to the bottom of the jars

Two particularly long chip clips in order to keep the wick centered within the jar while the soy candles are setting.

Now for the Directions:

Get the candle supplies gathered onto the work area and place some wax paper on the counter or work space to make cleanup easier.

Put the jars onto the wax paper.

Stick the wick stickers on the bottom of the metal wick tab.

Place each wick in the center of the jars making sure to press firmly so the wick sticker sticks securely to the bottom of the jar. If the wick is not sticking firmly, you may warm up the jars a little.

Put your Pour Pot upon the scale and 0 it out. Pour 1 lb of wax into your pour pot.

Now place the cooking pot on the stove burner and put about 1 1/2 inches of water in the bottom. Place your pour pot into the pot of water and put the stove to medium low.

Now put the candy thermometer into the pour pot. Set a kitchen timer for 10min. so you remember to check on the wax and temp.

As soon as the thermometer gets to 180 degrees, take the pour pot out and put it on the scale again and zero it out.

Next add the 1 oz of fragrance oil (according to weight) and mix well.

Then you need to add the candle dye before the wax cools under 165 degrees. If the wax has cooled too much before adding the dye, you can put the pour pot inside the cooking pot again and heat it back up on medium low heat to 170-180 degrees.

Stir well and then let the wax sit and cool.

Once the soy wax reaches 95-110 degrees, it is now time to pour into your jars. Make sure you mix several times just before pouring.

Steadily pour the soy wax right into your mason jars. Pouring slowly sees to it that you dont have any air bubbles. After you have filled your mason jars you should cautiously arrange the chip clip on each individual candle wick to make it centered in the container during cooling.

Let the candles cool for about an hour or longer prior to taking the clips off. After that clip the wicks to approx 1/4 inch.

Now let the soy candles cure at the very least 24 hours before burning them. A couple of days is best.
