Useful Tips For DIY Aquaponics

by Samuel R. Stevens

Aquaculture and hydroponics are the two most popular food production systems today. The later is the cultivation of vegetables and fruits with water as the propagation media. Aquaculture on the other hand is raising of aquatic animals like crayfish, snails, prawns and other fish. Some people have gone a step further and combined the two. In this case, the environment is symbiotic - there is no accumulation of waste products as it is used by the other group. There are a number of DIY aquaponics you might find useful.

Some of the fish which are commonly raised are barramudi, the tandanus and eel-tailed catfish, Murray cod, silver perch and the jade perch. You can also try out growing lettuce, melons, Chinese cabbage, turnips, onions, radishes, beans, strawberries and sweet potatoes.

In order to successfully set up this system, you will require some items. The must have list should include a pond bin for the fish (its capacity should be between two hundred to three hundred liters), a grow tub, air pump, grow bed, waterproof extension cable, surge protector, pH testing kit, hose pipe and a wire gauze to keep away prey. You'll also have to identify the finger-lings to be bred.

The initial stage in setting up this system is digging up a hole in which the pond bin is to be placed. By being partially submerged in water, the fish tank's optimal temperature is regulated. Choose a spot shaded from the sun's heat. This reduces water-loss by evaporation.

Place the growing tub diagonally above the fish tank. The grow tub has small holes punctured on its bottom through which water is channeled back to the other system. This diagonal placement makes it easy for you to control circulation and pumping. An automated surge protector is connected to the pond pump so as to regulate the pressure of the water.

After chlorinating the water and leaving it for an hour, introduce fish. In the grow tub, add clay or gravel which is the propagation media. Other than transplanting seedlings, you can soar seeds, they will germinate. Your system is ready.

Maintenance of an aquaponics system is easy. Just regulate constant water levels. Remove waste like feces from birds and insects. They can make the water toxic. Supply the vegetables with supplements. For a detailed approach to this subject, check out internet resources. Type in DIY aquaponics in your preferred browser.
