The Judging Standards of the International Woodcarvers Congress

by Joseph Tranturder

One of man's favorite outdoor past-times is camping. Give us a comfy bed in a nice warm house any night of the week, but the weekend calls for something special.

You have a better chance of winning this year's Powerball than finding a person spending hours carving one block of wood. It used to be that people spend their free time shaving away, creating their own toys and sculptures.

With modern advances of technology, a machine can be taught to do the very same thing for a fraction of the time. When they're made in the factory, the art is easily forgotten and talent is no longer cultivated.

Both amateur and professional craftsmen accomplish this by the use of wood carving tools that are specifically designed to remove and shape wood.

Life is good. The experience is only enhanced by the smell of a campfire getting started, the sound of the leaves rustling in the wind and the sight of a large bag of hotdogs to roast.

This is a non-profit organization which takes as its number one responsibility, the promotion of woodcarving. They host the International Woodcarvers Congress every year.

This means that all the food, condiments, flashlights, wood for the fire, and entertainment items are assembled close by for easy access.

In these sessions, the judges release information on the key points of interest they are looking for. Each criteria they search for connects back to one of four judging standards of the competition. First, they look for originality and design. This means that the subject matter must be unusual and exceptionally interpreted.

They look to see if the piece is true to life and spot on with their proportions. Believe it or not, it's possible to make a piece look extremely realistic with the right wood carving tools. Second, they look for expert execution. Proper carving techniques, tight laminations and properly placed add-ons are requisite to having a well scored piece.

To have a variety of chisels is to have more tools to work with, making any form or style of cut possible.

Complete with sharp blade, saw and toothpick, you'll have all the basic tools to get you started on any block of wood while also helping you keep your teeth clean. Another tool of interest is a parting tool.

There should be no blemishes, edges or smooth curves that weren't meant to be there. Use your wood carving tools effectively to cover every surface.

These are great for outlining your projects. Chisels are a must if you want to ensure any surface is flat. Should you need to corner any part of the block, pick up the chisels' cousin, the skew. Finally, to ensure a smoothed out finished product, grab a spoon gouge.

Even if you're not interested in entering the competition, you should drop by to see some truly amazing talent. The art is still alive, you just have to look for it to find it.
