Tips On Pruning Your Orchids For Robust Growth And Elegant Blossoms
by Mei Bladen
Unlike other plants when you grow orchids, at some point you'll recognize the necessity to do some pruning to your plants. The two primary reasons it's necessary to do this are to grow more flowers or assist the plant to grow by developing more leaves. The big concern, of course, is knowing the timing of when your orchid plant is ready to be pruned and should you prune for blossom growth or stimulate leaf growth.
If your orchid plant has just finished up a flowering cycle it could be ready to produce another one. If you inspect the bloom spike you'll see that there nodes which are located along it every 3 or 4 inches. If the nodes appear to have a greenish color and are seemingly healthy and there is no new leaves developing then you can go for another crop of flowers.
But if the nodes look dry and have a brownish color you'll probably want to prune in order that the plant will concentrate on leaf growth. This is especially the situation if you observe the beginnings of a new leaf.
Before you commence your surgical operation it's important to have the correct equipment available for the job. You can pick either a scalpel or sharp pair of shears. Whichever way you go you must sterilize these instruments so you don't infect the plant. You can perform this by thoroughly wiping them with alcohol or by heating them with a propane torch.
Now you're ready to perform your slice. If your plan is to develop more orchid flowers cut the spike at about half an inch above the second node from the bottom. If, however, you want to promote more leaf growth chop the spike off at the base.
After you have finished the cutting borrow a little bit of cinnamon from your spice rack and tap a little bit on the exposed wound covering it completely. This will help to keep disease from entering through this area.
Now it is just a matter of waiting. It may take a month or more for a new bloom spike to appear and it may take a month or longer before you see any blooms. If you're promoting new leaf growth it will also take a month or more for the new leaf to be fully grown.
If you get pleasure from <a href="http://www.secretsoforchidcare.com/">orchid growing</a> one job you'll need to know is <a href="http://www.secretsoforchidcare.com/orchid-pruning/">how to prune orchids</a>.
