There is nothing better or more exhilarating for a young fan than to be wearing the same hat, shirt, jersey, or anything else that his favorite player wears. The 12th man is a symbol of the people in the stands who are cheering for their team. They are saying that they are the 12th person on the field. They have been getting to the playoffs the last couple years and this after a playoff drought that rivaled some of the longer ones in the league.
They started changing the design of the hats each year. This gave people a reason to buy a new hat each year, even if they already owned one for their favorite team. Players were endorsing them and that got people to want them even more. The jerseys were selling very well too. They even gave people a chance to see who was more popular by who's jersey sold the best.
These and other marketing programs really took of and helped the NFL gain its foothold in the clothing market, one that it would not let go. The people who were buying things from markets other than their own were relishing in the fact that they could have the merchandise that they wanted even though they may have lived 1000 miles away.
That was what was so great about the modern Seahawks hats. The fact that anybody could go to the store or to the team website and order the same hat that the star players are wearing is what has generated the sales. It is a great marketing plan and it worked. Everything they wear is for sale for the most part, all you have to do is check out their team site.
