How I Would Envision a Video Game Death Race
by Rob Sutter
When I had learned about the death race which runners go about, I couldn't help but shudder at the thought of going about it. I think that such an event is tremendous but the fact that there is so much that the body has to put out is something that may not be for everyone. Upon seeing the name itself, it made my creative wheels spin and I had to picture what exactly would be included. When it comes to a race associated with gaming, there are some ideas I envision.
First and foremost, a death race is not about physical attacks but rather how much energy you can put forth when pushing yourself through events. There are going to be many features associated with companies on the matter like Spartan Race and you have to be certain you can handle them all. For one, you'll have to make treks through mud in the hopes that you can keep your footing. Add in the elements like fire to the equation and it's the kind of event which can test you.
Understanding the race in its basic form is important but how could it translate to gaming? I think that you're going to have to talk about long jumps, since that seems to be the common feature that has been in games for as long as I could remember. People have to show that they have the drive to leap long distances in order to avoid potential hazards. If this kind of race wanted to be close to gaming, such hazards would have to be seen constantly.
I think that the addition of fire works well in these races because it cranks up the intensity and drives people to conserve the oxygen they have since the flames can burn it away easily. You may also want to talk about walls to climb up, since that requires energy as well. In addition, what about leaping from one platform to the next in order to avoid mud down below? This gives people more of an incentive to pay attention and not lose their balance, either.
It's apparent that a death race can do many things to people, whether or not they find themselves to be athletic. I think that this is important to note because everyone is going to be challenged for it. It's this kind of race in which competitors will be tested and, if nothing else, it will prove to be something of a learning experience. If you have a certain breaking point, you may be able to learn where it is and it is possible that you'll be inclined to push it to see how far you can go.
