Bicycle Riding: Could Leaders Bring It To Higher Levels?
by Rob Sutter
It seems like, for as much as bicycle riding is done in the United States, it seems to be conducted in higher numbers in other areas. People have taken the initiative to cast aside these forms of travel for the moment so that they can be more active in other areas. It's clear that this is growing in popular, in far-off areas more than any others, from what I've seen. In London, in particular, there is a growing demand for this and leaders have taken notice.
According to an article on the Globe and Mail, London mayor Boris Johnson has brought about a number of efforts in order to make city bicycle riding much more of a popular event. Not only did he talk about how much these advancements were needed but he actually took it upon himself to ride. He did it as something of a political statement and considering that he is in a position of power, people will certainly take notice. This movement should easily have the support of companies like Linus Bike.
The amibious nature of the mayor cannot be understated, especially when he dedicated money as well as time into the matter. The article said that there would be $1.4 billion given to the construction of roads and paths made exclusively for cyclists. This says a great deal about the mayor's support of the idea, as you could imagine. It's also been said that this movement would not simply be a passing trend and I think that it has the potential to become a constant ritual.
When I spoke to a couple of friends about the possibility of roads being built for cyclist usage, they thought that it was a terrific concept. The reason that they didn't travel by bike more often, they said, is that they didn't have dedicated systems by which to travel. At least with these kinds of roads being constructed, there wouldn't be as many instances of traffic, if any at all. Commutes should not be as arduous and I think that these roads could be of the utmost help.
With one leader's movement in order to make bicycle riding easier for people, one can only imagine that this will pick up steam in the future. In my eyes, there aren't quite as many people with power in the world than those who have been voted on. It's apparent that the population has confidence in their abilities to take care of matters and overall aptitude as well. I am sure that many will be surprised that their actions can work to make matters like travel simpler, too.
