Spring into action in London
by Sara Rizk
Everyone loves spring: it's a season we long for throughout the dank days of winter. And what a winter! Months like eons, full of squat days travelling to work and back in the dark; strangled with thick jumpers and weighty scarves only to face the soggy washing drooping on steaming radiators when we finally collapse in ourdarkhomes.
How many of us love winter? I doubt there can be a positive answer to that given the numbers of us who flee to warmer climes for short breaks, whole seasons or forever. Winter brings such a deep sense of hopelessness; we tend to believe that everything will be alright only once spring has finally sprung. Then, we will once again be able to garden, go for a jog, eat healthily, laugh more, attain more, feel real joy. Sadly, there can be no instant gratification just because April has arrived!
Yup, let us face facts: many of us are prone to 'tomorrow' lives; lives where great things gleam at us from a vague, hazy horizon. Seemingly, it is only once we have earned, found, bought, achieved, gained, succeeded that those glistening rays of hope will beam warmly upon us, bestowing true self-worth and fulfilment.
We spring clean, we visit DIY stores, we gleefully pack our woollies into moth balls: 'Now is the time', we say, hopeful of the blessing of Better. But, once the walls are freshly papered; the kitchen is spotless; the bikini flutters brightly on the line... are we happy then? No, still we wait and wait... Better is not close enough. Today falls short, not quite good enough.
Why can't we live in the present? We wait for tomorrow which smiles at us with the promise of greatness, success, the perfect body, the seamless life, the bulging bank balance. We hunger to earn, find, achieve, attain, win, buy and once we have, and only then, will we allow ourselves to feel an iota of self-esteem and pleasure.
Let us embrace this season and every other season with determination to live in the moment. Let us stop looking to the future for the realisation of our goals. Let us live in the present which can be beautiful, inspirational, glorious if only we will let it. Motivating ourselves to value the blessings bestowed upon every day will help us to grow into grateful, cheerful, positive people who find full joy in the simplest of things. And you don't have to wait for a season to spring into action.
