There are books, comics, video games, and naturally, television shows, based around the original storylines and characters of Battlestar Galactica. Television viewers were the first to be introduced to the characters that drive the plot of BG when the original series of that name was broadcasted in the 1970's. There are many more television series based on the characters now and they have found an international audience along with online games that include the same characters. The fact that BG has been able to move into the gaming world is particularly interesting; game designers have included the majority of the key characters and creatures that are already familiar to fans of the series. What are some of the key aspects of these video games and what makes them unique in the modern gaming world?
The main storyline of Battlestar Galactica is about human colonists who have been forced to leave their planet because of a war with the robotic and evil Cylons. The TV show followed these two groups and they also comprise the two main factions in the video game in the same franchise. When you make your character you will be given the option to play as a Human colonist or as a Cylon warrior. There are several differences between the factions in the game so think carefully about which faction you would rather play as before finalizing the creation of your character.
Most of the conflicts in your Battlestar Galactica game will pit you against either the Humans or the Cylon, depending on which side you have chosen to go with. At times you will encounter other enemies that are common threats to both factions. You might need to fight some battles in space using your faction's fighter ships while other battles will take place on the ground using your character's abilities and items.
Social elements of online games are also present in BG games that are designed as massively multiplayer online role playing games, or MMORPG's. You may have developed a powerful character, but that does not mean that you can go it alone in this game; teaming up with other players is essential during many key battles.
Battlestar Galactica currently enjoys a considerable fan base around the world but now it is also able to reach out to gamers. Being given the option to play as either Human or Cylon gives you an interesting choice in the game from the very start.
