Clean Your Jewellery The Right Way

by Anita Hale

If you value jewellery then you'll definitely want to know the best way to look after it. This short guide offers some great advice on how to clean your jewellery and ensure it stays looking its best.

For a start, nearly all jewellery will suffer from wear and tear. This is simply just something that happens over its lifespan But there are a number of things you can do to reduce the rate at which this happens. First of all, you need to cut down on the scenarios in which you wear your jewellery. For instance, it isn't a good idea to wear your jewellery in bed. This is because when tend to toss and turn in our sleep. This can easily lead to your jewellery getting scuffed. Another situation where it's best to avoid wearing jewellery is playing sport. This includes working out at the gym. This is because we tend to perspire heavily when doing these activities and sweat can tarnish metal. There are also dangerous chemicals in come brands of hairspray and nail polish remover. Take care with your jewellery around these products.

There is a growing fashion for using oxidised metals in jewellery. This metal has been treated to make it look black. You have to look after such jewellery to keep this black appearance from spoiling. First of all, you should never wear these types of jewellery while swimming. This is because exposure to chlorine will causes significant damage to the metal. The same rule applies to gold and silver jewellery. You should also never use silver polishing liquid on oxidised metal or pearls.

Most jewellery is not made from oxidised metal. In these cases you will need to make sure that the metal does not become oxidised. This is because oxidation effectively tarnishes the metal. This in turn causes discolouration. There are sulphur compounds present in a number of products which can cause oxidation. These can happen if they make contact with certain metals. These products include table salt and synthetic detergent.

It's possible to eliminate tarnish by using silver polishing liquid. But make sure it is applied in small amounts. This is because as some of these polishes are abrasive and may wear down silver even more. But for regular cleaning you can just use start using a silver polishing cloth. If you need to get rid of dirt, try soap and lukewarm water. Very small and detailed pieces of jewellery can be carefully cleaned with a toothbrush.

Finally, it is useful to remember that more pure metals are more prone to scratching. This is because purer metals like 14k gold are softer than non-pure metals. Less pure metals are made from a compound of alloys which makes them harder and more durable. This is why you should take special care when wearing different types of jewellery next to each other. This is a common issue with rings. Try not to wear expensive rings next to those made from cheaper metals. This is because the cheaper ring can scratch against the more expensive one.
