How To Take Care Of Teak Furniture
by Derek Rushmoore
Teak patio furniture is the most superior quality patio furniture imaginable. Teak furniture is also very easy to care for. Teak wood has unique qualities that make it excellent for outside use. Teak garden furniture requires very little care or maintenance to last many years.
Teakwood is one of the most expensive woods. Nevertheless, you can come to the conclusion that teak patio furniture is a practical investment owing to its natural strengths.
It is best to clean up your teak outdoor furniture at least once a year in order to stop the collection of dust or dirt. Easiest way is to use a hose without high pressure to rinse the dust and dirt away. Then, using a soft bristled brush, scrub the wood not too roughly with a mix of warm water, mild detergent, and a few spoonfuls of bleach. Using bleach too often will lead to a pale color so bleaching is up to your judgement. After this, rinse once more with clean water.
Teak outdoor furniture that is kept outside will by nature begin to slowly fade color from the honey color of fresh wood to a gray patina. This process of teak furniture turning gray is harmless and merely affects the outer appearance. It does not affect the longevity of your outdoor teak furniture.
There are people really like the golden honey coloring of brand new teak furniture and buy teak oil as a method to preserve it. However, teak oil is bad because it needs to be used every three months from the time you start applying it. Oils will also improve the probability for mildew to grow. It is better to apply teak sealer yearly after a good cleaning of your teak garden furniture if you want to try to maintain the honey color.
You may decide to get a furniture cover for your outdoor teak furniture, particularly in the winter months or if your house is in an area that has a lot of dust. If you opt to do so, be sure to find a furniture cover made with a breathable fabric. Do not use a cover made from plastic that is going to collect moisture. It would raise the possibility of mildew growing on the surface.
Dark stains such as coffee or red wine can be removed by using sandpaper on the outer most layer of your teak patio furniture. You can begin with a mid grade sandpaper and after that finish off with a fine grade to make a smooth outer finish. Sanding is another way of bringing out the honey coloring of teak wood as you are exposing a new level of teak that is permeated with natural oils.
Regardless if your furniture is a teak shower bench or a teak bistro set, a little care will go far.
Now you can see, your teak garden furniture is going to last decades with little care for you to do. Because it lasts such a long time, teak is preferred to other types of hardwood. You can know that the teak outdoor set you purchase today will be enjoyed by your family in the future.
