Some Tips On Moonbow Photography

by Bernice Terry

The moonbow or the moon rainbow is definitely one of the most beautiful sights to the human eye and is also a very great thing for photographers to grab on camera. Of course if one would want to capture a nice picture of a moon rainbow, there are some things that he must take of. So for those who are into moonbow photography, here are some tips.

It pays to do a lot of research because this kind of occurrence is very rare and only happens during a full moon. That is why if one would want to capture it on film, then he has to observe the moon. If it is very bright and relatively close to the earth, then there is a big chance that the lunar bow will appear.

Now if one already has done his research and knows when to find the moon rainbow, then he must decide where he can shoot. The best place to be able to get a nice view would be somewhere on higher ground like a waterfall or at the top of a rock. Also, observe the exact location of the moon and make sure to point the camera where the moon is.

So once the photographer has gotten the time and place of the rainbow already, the next step is thinking about getting the picture. One very important thing to take note of would be to never use flash. Unfortunately, if one uses flash, he might actually block the lunar bow instead of capture it and just end up with a white line.

With regard to the equipment, then the most important thing to bring would be the camera. Another thing that is very crucial in the process would be the tripod in order to keep the camera still. It is very important that the photographer makes sure that the camera does not move around or shake because the photo will blur.

Now in order to take a nice picture, one must take note of his surroundings. He must know that he is in an area where mists and fogs are very prominent and might fog up the lens of his camera. That is why he must bring something to protect his lens like a lens protector or a lens cover.

One more recommended thing to do but is optional would be to bring a very wide angle lens. No one knows where the moon rainbow will pop out and even if one points his camera in a specific direction, this does not mean that the lunar bow will pop up there. That is why he must have a wide lens so he can capture a big portion of the scenery.

So as one can see, there are a lot of things to take note of when doing moonbow photography. As stated above, it pays to do a lot of research and a lot of homework on moonbows because they do not appear often. When they do, it is a very fortunate occurrence for any photographer.
