How To Care For Teak Furniture

by Jordan Matthews

Teak garden furniture is the highest quality patio furniture possible. Teak garden furniture is also extremely simply to maintain. Teak wood has special qualities that make teak furniture the best for outdoor use. Teak patio furniture takes just a little attention to last a long time.

Teak wood is one of the most costly woods. Despite this, we should conclude that teak furniture is a practical investment based on its durability.

It is good to clean your outdoor teak furniture once in a while to remove any buildup of dust or dirt. It is possible to spray water using a garden hose without high pressure to rinse the dirt and dust off. Following that, using a soft bristled brush, wash the surface gently with a blend of water, detergent, and a few spoonfuls of bleach. If you use bleach too often is going to make the wood pale so using bleach is up to you. After this, rinse another time with pure water. Dry using a towel to finish.

Outdoor teak furniture which is left outside will by nature begin to eventually fade color from the golden honey color of fresh wood to a silver-gray color. This process of wood changing to silver-gray is harmless and purely affects the outer appearance. The process does not affect the stability of your outdoor teak furniture.

Some people really like the golden honey tone of new teak furniture and treat with teak oil as a way to keep this tone. However, teak oil is bad because it needs to be reapplied every three or four once you begin applying it. Oils will also raise the chance for mildew to appear. A better idea is to apply teak sealer yearly after cleaning your teak outdoor furniture in order to try to preserve the golden color.

You may choose to use a furniture cover for your teak patio furniture, especially in the winter or if you live in a place that has a lot of dust. If you select to use covers, be sure to purchase a furniture cover made made from a material that breathes. Do not get a cover made from plastic which is certain to trap humidity. This increases the chance of mold and mildew growing on the wood.

Dark stains like red wine and coffee can be removed by sanding the outer most layer of your outdoor teak furniture. Begin with a grade medium sandpaper and after that finish off with a fine grade sandpaper to make the surface of the teak smooth. Sanding like this is also a way to bring out the golden honey glow of teakwood since you expose a fresh layer of wood which is saturated with natural oils.

It doesn't matter if your furniture is a teak adirondack chair or a teak shower mat, a bit of maintenance will go a long way.

Now you can see, your outdoor teak furniture will last a lifetime with very little maintenance from you. As it will last for so long, teak wood is better than other varieties of wood. You will know that the teak dining set you buy at this time will be handed down to your children and grandchildren.
