Power Plate brings the concept of whole body vibration to exercise programs, improving muscle tone without the demands of weight lifting or aerobic exercise. People of many ability levels and body types will find that vibration produces many physiological benefits with just a few minutes use per day. Exercisers may utilize the machines at their gym or may purchase machines to use in their homes.
Whole body vibration was originally developed for the space program. Russian cosmonauts used the equipment to build bone density and to condition their muscles for trips into space. The idea sparked interest across Japan, Europe and the United States. Some people even established workout centers devoted to the concept of the vibration workout.
Vibration may have many physiological benefits for exercisers. Muscles will demonstrate better strength, flexibility and circulation along with better post-workout recovery. Also, vibration platforms may increase both core strength and metabolism. Many people who use vibration platforms experience increases in bone density. In addition, working out on the platform may improve lymphatic flow, reduce cortisol levels and elevate human growth hormone in the body.
Studies have verified the benefits of whole body vibration. One study reported in the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research noted that women who used vibration platforms 30 minutes per day, three days per week had higher hip bone density. Another study in the Journal of the American Geriatric Society reported that seniors, particularly those unable to participate in demanding exercise programs, enjoyed better movement speed and increased muscle strength after using the vibrating platform.
Whole body vibration has also been shown to have toning and weight loss benefits. The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences noted a study in which mice were placed on a vibrating platform for 15 minutes, five days weekly. The mice showed a significant decrease in torso size after 15 weeks, even though they ate the same amount of food as the control group.
During a whole body vibration workout, muscles work even when the participant is still. This happens because the body responds naturally to vibration, contracting muscles as few as 25 times per minute and as many as 50 times per minute. The vibrations cause muscle contractions in both the vertical and horizontal planes, which results in increased power and strength. These benefits will be apparent both in accomplished athletes and in people with severely limited mobility.
Whole body vibration machines, such as Power Plate, provide intermittent bursts of vibration. People may choose to either stand with knees bent on the platform or perform dynamic exercises. The vibrating platform will provide fresh challenges to tired workouts. Even people who simply stand still will notice improved core conditioning.
Many fitness centers and gyms feature whole body vibration machines, and many manufacturers sell smaller models for use in the home. For athletes looking for a new dimension to their workouts or for people with mobility limitations, vibrating platforms like Power Plate will provide a workout boost. People should seek the advice of a fitness professional when first using the machine and should discuss the benefits of this program with their doctor.
