You own a Hasbro Furyfire, which you enjoy, but every time you use it, you find yourself wishing that it was just a bit more powerful. Here's the real deal. Your gun has the potential for a far greater range, but Nerf reduces the shooting distance for safety's sake. The fact is, you can have a gun that is mightier and more fearsome by using a few simple tools and a dash of patience.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF DOING A MOD?
You achieve a couple of primary benefits when you mod your gun. For starters, you will improve your range. Consider the nerf gun you own. What kind of distance does it get? If your guess fell between the range of 15 to 35 feet, that's a reasonable - although inaccurate - response because, if you envision the gun in possession of all the power it can handle, you may have correctly guessed that it could shoot darts two or three times that far. It can happen. Guns have been modded so that they shoot more than 100 feet.
The next benefit applies to guns that are automatic. If you purchase an automatic rifle, you can expect it to take 7 to 8 seconds to fire off 25 rounds. However, can you imagine the ear-splitting sound of a gun firing at twice that speed? Try to imagine over eight rounds striking your victim every second. Pretty awesome, huh?
If you would like to make some extra money you could sell modded guns on auction sites like eBay.
What are the steps for performing a gun mod?
It is really simpler than you imagine to mod a gun. You can modify just about any Nerf gun you can buy in three different ways. Strengthen the spring, remove air restrictors or mod the barrel by replacing it with a brass tube. All of these modifications are designed to increase the power of your gun, so your darts can be fired a greater distance. You also have the option of making and using homemade darts, or "Stefans."
Step 1: STRONGER SPRING: This will require that you unscrew the gun making sure that you do not lose the screws. After unscrewing the gun, you'll be looking at its inner workings. Within this chamber of the gun, there are also the spring mechanisms. You will find one, for instance, in the middle of a CS-6. One way to enhance your gun is by investing in some 20-lb. springs capable of supercharging your gun's firing power. The kick is going to cause your gun to have a lot more power, so if you do not want your gun to completely break, you might have to use some PVC pipe afterwards in order to add more reinforcement to your gun. All you need to do next is change out the screws and you're ready to go. Actually locating your gun's spring isn't too big of a challenge.
Step 2: ELIMINATE AIR RESTRICTORS: Air restrictors are plastic parts that absorb approximately 50 percent of the energy of your shot. You just need a couple simple tools for this task - a drill with a long drill bit and a screwdriver (with Phillips head). Once again, remove the firearm's screws - noting where to replace them. After removing the trigger on the CS-6 look in the middle for a tube that looks like a turret and locate the blocked space within that tube. On the other end, you should notice a needle that extends 2/3 of the way beyond the tube. If you remove the needle part there will be nothing to restrict air flow so shots will travel a greater distance than you ever considered likely. Don't proceed until you reassemble your weapon!
Step 3: Barrel modding instructions: Don't let this simple step stop you from achieving your dream gun. As a rule, these barrels are crafted from low-grade plastic - not exactly airtight. Use a 17/32 inch brass tube to replace the barrel and the reduction in friction will allow the darts to fly further. Simply perform a barrel upgrade by swapping your old barrel for the same size, but in copper or brass. It takes around ten minutes to accomplish this step.
Step 4: Hand-crafting "Stefans": You might not know this, but half-inch foam backer rod is the stuff that Nerf darts are typically made of. If you go to the nearest hardware outlet for a 20-ft. pack of this, guess what you've got? What you have, in effect, is the raw material for making a bunch of darts (you just have to add a hole). Now you need to snip the material into sections the size of darts - you'll make about 75 per pack. All it takes is an ordinary blow dryer used on hair and a pillowcase from any pillow to do the cutting and straightening. Allow the blow dryer to operate for a minute or so, give the pillowcase a good shake, and then let everything cool off.
Next, use an empty glue gun to create openings in the top at the center and then fill the hole with a BB and top it off with glue. Invest about a half an hour to yield 75 of these fully functioning darts.
The fastest and simplest way to maximize the potential of your Nerf gun is to mod it and to make homemade darts, and whatever your reason for doing so, be it for pleasure or profit, you'll find that modded Nerf guns are becoming highly coveted items.
