Wood lathe turning can be both a spiritual and addictive experience. It is in itself a complete entity capable of producing finished work. Your choice of wood lathe chucks can determine the outcome of your project, and produce interesting results.
A lathe is used to turn wood stock, at which time the piece becomes known as a 'turning'. This turning must be held accurately and firmly in place for a machine to rotate it. This is accomplished by a device, with either a 3 or 4 jaws, known as a chuck.
You use T-handled tool called a chuck key to close the jaws. This simple process creates compression that holds your turning tightly in place, instead of it flying off into outer space, or a neighboring window.
Once the chuck is properly installed and tightened on the turning it frees up the tailstock that would have supported the other end. With that gone, the turning is ready for you to turn bowls or other small items using the lathe.
The three-jaw chuck automatically centers your turning, and it would help if the end of your turning is symmetrical because the finished piece will become rounded off to a point toward the jaw center. This is standard for lathe working.
A four-jaw chuck is extremely adjustable allowing you to fine tune each jaw tooth to modify the angle of the turning. This is done by using the chuck key to modify the angle of the tooth you want to reposition. You simply cannot do this type of work with a three-jaw chuck.
Chucks come in various sizes depending on the lathe and piece being turned. You use small chucks like those used by jewelers to turn tiny stock for delicate wooden pieces. Jaws for larger stock like fancy posts and large dish shaped items can be up to 24-inches in diameter and are mounted on a long table powered by more powerful motors. Lathes are labeled according to the size of the diameter of your work piece, hence a 12 inch lathe would handle turnings up to 12 inches in diameter. The other matter to know about is the center-to-center measurement as this determines the length of wood you can mount between the headstock and tailstock.
As with any tool that removes wood and rotates parts at high speed, precautions should be taken. Be sure to follow the owner's manual on the proper operation of the lather and any accessories you may purchase including your wood lathe chucks.
Having a great chuck for your wood lathe is important for maximum efficiency. You can find such chucks at our website, where you will see reviews on many makes and models, here - Wood Lathe Chucks.
