A Short Look At Top Cop Dogs

by Heinz Kaufmann

The cop dog or K9 are very important to law enforcing groups because of its unparalleled strength and intellect. They are significant escorts to police officers thanks to their loyalty and protectiveness.

As far back in the 19th century the Berlin police force has used German shepherds as cop dogs to protect the law-enforcement personnel who patrolled the dark alleys and poorly lit street ways. They offered a lot of security and were uniquely brave in defending the police against attackers.

German Shepherds are considered to be a new breed. The VS, the first breeding club for German Shepherds, was formed in 1899. Originally, it was developed to serve as a helper to herd cattle. But its encompassing ability to track, protectiveness, and boldness were soon observed and made them guard and cop dogs by the aforesaid breeding club.

German Shepherds were bred carefully to preserve its encompassing traits. Training programs to develop abilities of tracking, obedience and protectiveness were equally arranged.

The concept of training German Shepherds as cop dogs were not acceptable for the Europeans. Actually, they thought that it was too expensive to do so. Hence they were only used as guard dogs. But due to their unequaled performance during World War I, this impression changed.

Today the German Shepherd cop dog is essential in every reputed law-enforcement agency. They have proven to be indispensable as companions as well as trackers. Some dogs have a very keen sense of smell and this has been developed further to enable them to track explosive substances and prohibited drugs without causing any attention.

Its attentiveness also makes it incomparable. It can find out decomposing bodies through its keen olfactory sense combined with proper training. German Shepherd played a significant role during the World War I and became renowned in America. But post World War II, the popularity tailed off because of the image brought by Nazi Germany.

However, the dog has innate qualities of obedience, a balanced temperament and it is remarkably strong and large. With a good work ethic it was soon renamed the American Shepherd or the Alsatian dog to reverse the connection with Nazi Germany.

These canines have become one of the highly acclaimed breeds not only in the US but in different parts of the world. It may be because of the essential role they play in law enforcement. In disordered public places, they are used to regain social order with their loud bark. They are also being trained to be part of search and rescue operations as well as chasing law offenders. They are well-cared for and respected. Cop dogs are even provided with bulletproof vests while at duty and harming or killing them is considered a crime.
