You like your N-Strike Nite Finder 3 but you probably wish you could get more power from it. And let's acknowledge it. The weapon can shoot much further, however for safety reasons, Nerf tones down the range. Your weapon is capable of more power and more intimidation if you employ some simple tools and a modicum of patience.
What are the reasons for performing a gun mod?
You get a number of benefits by modding a gun. Number one - it makes a big difference in the distance you can achieve when shooting. Take a second to think about your own Nerf gun. What kind of firing distance can you manage? You would probably say between 15 and 35 feet which is decent but what would you say if you could double or even triple that distance? Distances like these are not out of the question. After modding their weapons, in some cases the firing capacity exceeds a hundred feet.
Automatic guns are the second reason. If you own an automatic rifle, it is probably capable of shooting 25 rounds of ammo in 8 seconds. Now, imagine the difference if your gun went through the same number of rounds in under half the time? That would yield a firing rate of eight rounds a second when you are shooting your target. Pretty radical, you have to admit.
Some people even make money by selling modded guns online through sites like eBay and you can, too.
WHAT ARE THE STEPS TO MODDING A GUN?
Modding a gun is really not difficult as you would believe. When it comes to mass-market Nerf guns, you can perform three fundamental kinds of modification. Replace the spring with a stronger one, take out the air restrictors, and barrel modding or replacing the plastic barrel with a brass one. Each of these will put more power behind each shot thus increasing the range of the darts. Another thing you can do is to make your very own darts or "stefans".
PART 1: MAKING STRONGER SPRINGS To accomplish this step, unscrew your gun (keep track of the screws!) Removing the screws from the gun reveals all of its inner mechanisms. Another thing that is contained in the pulling system is springs. For instance, it is in the center of the CS-6. Did you know that you can purchase a few twenty-pound springs that will make it possible to significantly improve your firing power. The gun will be more powerful and may have a recoil sufficient to cause damage to itself so you might need to reinforce the gun with PVC pipe. Once you complete this operation, replace each screw - now you're ready to proceed. It is not hard to locate the spring on the gun.
PART 2: REMOVE AIR RESTRICTORS Pieces of plastic, Air Restrictors require about 50% of your energy which you invest into the shot and just totally waste it. Get a Phillips Head screwdriver and a drill with a long bit. One more time, remove the screws, while making a mental note of where they belong. After you remove the trigger on the CS-6 locate a tube that looks like a turret in the middle of the gun and then find a blocked space inside of it. At the opposing side, there should be a needle that extends past the tube about 2/3 of its length. Use the drill to remove the needle and the air will flow unrestricted thus allowing your shots to travel a greater distance. Don't neglect to assemble your gun again.
PART 3: MODDING BARREL It's quite simple. Barrels are typically manufactured using inexpensive materials and they do not retain air. Replacing the plastic barrel with a 17/32 inch brass tube will reduce the friction which means the barrel will go a greater distance. Swap out the barrel and replace it with a copper or brass barrel that is the same size. This is a 10-minute job.
#4: Make-at-home "Stefans": In reality, Nerf darts aren't much more than foam backer rod measuring a half-inch across. Do you know what you get when you buy a 20 ft. pack of this material at the local hardware? You have in your hands the foundation for creating 20 ft. worth of darts, once you add a hole to each. You can make around 75 makeshift darts per package by trimming this to the proper dart length. Slice them and make them straight with your tools: blow dryer and pillowcase. Keep the blow dryer running a minute or so, give the pillow case a shake, then allow them to cool off.
Now you need to perforate the darts at the top with your glue gun; then insert a BB and close the hole with hot glue. You can crank out around 75 of these in a half hour's time.
Enhancing the ability and resale value of your Nerf Gun through modding and making darts can be simple and fast to do.
