Everyone is aware of what it's like to wear uncomfortable or badly-fitting clothes, or even worse, to be out somewhere and see someone wearing the same thing. If you decide to create your own garment this won't be a problem!
Whether you are a proficient dressmaker or a rookie, a tailor's dummy is key. While making clothes might seem effortless when using a pattern, everyone's shape is different, and the only way you can know that the clothing will fit perfectly is by using a dressmaker's dummy. It enables you to make an outfit that is customized for someone, taking into account actual measurements. Nobody has the same body shape, and a perfect fit will only be achieved if you take advantage of a dressmaker's mannequin.
Altering clothes is also much easier. It's very hard to try to alter a garment with a flat paper pattern - it takes forever to get the measurements and then change the outline of the garment. With a dressmaker's dummy, you can simply pin the garment in the appropriate place, and then just change it think it's necessary. Also, being able to observe the finished outfit on the mannequin enables you to add a few special touches that you might not have thought of otherwise.
A dressmaker's dummy is especially helpful if you want to find out exactly how the material will hang. This can change due to the how much your fabric weighs, and can only be seen correctly when you a three dimensional form. It allows you to drape the material until you get the shape that you are looking for. This relates to both dense fabrics such as velvet or something sheer like gauze. A swing skirt, sheer blouse or full length column dress can only be pit together correctly using a dummy.
If you want to create a unique outfit for someone, don't have them come in for multiple fittings. Take their initial measurements, then use the dummy to find the correct fit until you have a garment that they are able try on. No-one likes getting stuck with pins!
There are a couple of types of of dummies, varying in cost. They are made out of wire, foam or plastic. An adjustable form has dials around the hips, waist and bust, enabling you to put together a custom fit according to a person's body. A foam form is particularly useful due to the fact that you can pin the material directly to the form, and also iron the material when it is in place. The waistline can not only be expanded, but also lengthened, and will also take into account someone's height. This is excellent for someone with a big bust as opposed to thinner hips and vice versa. This kind of dressmaker dummy runs at approximately 70 - 150. A non-adjustable form is usually available in a standard size (for example 8,10,12 and upwards). This is ideal if you are what is considered a normal figure for your size. The really costly type of dressmaker's dummy is a professional form. This won't be completely suitable for someone who makes clothes as a hobby or a small business as it only uses sizes that are considered the 'industry standard'. (This is why designer clothing doesn't tend to correlate to normal size! Expect to pay about 250-500.
Whatever kind of tailor's mannequin you are looking for, no matter what your skill level, producing superb outfits will be so much easier. Release your inner dress designer!
