It Starts With Your Own LED Cube Kit

by Danny Mitchell

Imagine building something completely three dimensional, with bright flashing colors. It makes a distinctive and very attractive complement to a counter or as a general room piece. It can be owned in order to impress friends or simply to accomplish a project on your own. It allows a person to reach in and understand electronics. An LED cube kit can be your start to looking really smart.

This kit is seemingly simple, and yet can be a challenge to actually do. It is a set of plastic panels that assemble into the shape of a box. Each sheet has places for several dozen equidistant small light bulbs, which are actually pixels. They can shine all at once, but will typically dance in a hypnotic pattern. This does not happen on its own; it has an embedded processor that you install yourself.

It is an impressive experiment for science class or any other purpose, because it uses some of the same gadgets as is found in a flat screen. While the lights are about the same size as Christmas tree bulbs, they do not blink a single color. Instead, they are real pixels, about to show many different colors because they integrate the three primary colors into the same space.

Complexity of installation depends on the actual model purchased. Some are straightforward and partially preassembled, while others require the builder to do everything from drill the holes to connecting small wires. These more advanced puzzles are for people who really want to test their skills, and get into the small detail of the electronic components.

It can be a great way to learn about electronics for this precise reason. Modern pixel technology is everywhere, and understanding it can be worth a great deal of money, if a hobbyist turns an interest into a career. It is not the same as a computer screen, but is a representation on a visible scale.

Block pixel displays are popular because some people dream of the day when three dimensional television becomes a reality. A television based off this idea would have pixels set in several layers, rather than one. The result might be holographic, or at least a crisper picture.

This is an intelligent and stimulating hobby. Begin with something basic and learn as you go along. Whatever the case, having your own LED cube kit can be the start of a fun and challenging hobby. Impress friends and teachers with a simple toy that might also point the way to future technology.
