Success With Aquaponics, Fish, Poop And Growing Vegetables

by Victoria Kelley

Having a few problems with your aquaponics system? Maybe the ammonia, poop factor in the fish tank is a problem. Maybe you are questioning the type of fish to grow. Some people have a few questions about their growing success with the vegetables as well.

J. What fish is most valuable? A. A goldfish. Just a little fishy joke there people. Seriously though, if you are having some ammonia issues in the tank then there are a couple of solutions. You can either empty out half of the water in the tank and refill with clean, or you can add another grow bed to an aquaponics system that has been operating a few months. Fish will die in too much ammonia so the water flush may be the way to go. Check the ratios of your fish to water as well. Basically you should be looking at 1 pound of fish to 5 to 7 gallons of water, with the ideal being a maxium of 250 gallons per tank.

Onto the vegetable issues. There are some great organic products on the market to help you out. Leaves on plants which are turning yellow, may have a mineral deficiency. Some potassium and iron may easily fix the problem. Seasol or Neptunes Harvest are organic seaweed fertilizer and pretty harmless to the system. You can use these too. Red worms do wonderful things with the plants so try and throw a handful of them into the grow beds too. Finally, avoid trying to grow plants which rely on acidic based soils. These plants might include garlic, kiwi fruit, ginger or huckleberries.

Flow rate, pH, flood and drain cycle problems. Here are a few simple solutions to try. For your flow rate check the size of the pvc. 1 inch pipe is recommended for the system. Can your pump handle all the water flow? A bigger pump will pull more water through the system. pH should be checked daily for awhile until the system is more mature. Nature and natural bacteria will help with your pH too. Your bell siphon may not be getting enough air into the chamber. This can cause a problem with the flood and drain and stopping the cycles from working properly. Finally if you are having flow problems check the pvc running from the beds and back into the tank. You may just need to do a simple adjustment with the angle of the pipe.

Make your aquaponics gardening fun. Don't sit up at night getting all stressed over the little stuff. There are solutions out there on the internet with videos and online communities. Find a few and get involved. There is always an answer and this way of gardening is a learn as you go process. New updates with aquaponics are happening all the time. Have fun with it and enjoy.
