Stealth Hydro Set Up

It is easy to construct your own small hydroponic system. The materials can be bought at most building supply stores. You can get everything else at the local nursery or a department store.
Get the right size pump to start with. Find a smaller size aquarium pump. Professional grow shows consider a 250 gallon per hour pump small. They're too big for what we're planning, though, so avoid them. Get a smaller aquarium pump that runs at about 80 gph.
The next thing you need is two types of hose. First is the larger hose that comes right off the pump. The second type is much thinner, often called spaghetti tubing.
If you can get 1/2 inch hydroponic hose to connect right to the pump you're all set. If it won't go right on get some adapters so that you can attach it. This hose is the easiest to work with in terms of size and material. Take about a foot of this hose and attach it to the pump. Put a shut off or a stopper in the other end.
Cut 12 pieces of spaghetti tubing in 18 inch lengths. Get the little black plastic nipples and the tool that you use to insert them. Install the nipples in two rows of six nipples each in the header hose. Put a piece of spaghetti hose on each nipple.
The next requirement is the reservoir. Get a Rubbermaid tub with a lid. Put six holes in the top for the pots. Next, you need to drill a hole for each spaghetti tube. You also need a hole for the pump plug and a hole through which you can test the water|.
Put the pump and the header hose/spaghetti tube assembly in the tub. Fish the spaghetti tubes through the proper holes in the top. Insert your mesh pots in the top, fill them with hydroton and get the drip tubes arranged. Some people use alligator clamps of plastic, or drip emitters, but it's not totally necessary.
Fill the tub with your grow mix solution. With the pump turned on inspect the emitters. Look carefully for leaks or emitters that aren't working - if everything looks good you can add your plants.
