Baby Shower Foods

by Edie Mindell

As stated in numerous tips on baby shower foods, it is important to consider the foods that are healthy for the mom-to-be and should not trigger her allergies. This does not necessarily mean that you have to settle for a vegetarian meal. Rather, you have to educate yourself with the cautions on choosing the foods to be included in the menu. You should also learn how these foods should be prepared properly for a healthy baby shower meal.

There is no doubt that green leafy vegetables with some nuts, beans, and seeds are ideal for preparing healthy dishes such as vegetable soups, creams, salads, and stews. This type of food is rich in folic acid and sometimes Omega-3 fatty acids, which are important for a pregnant woman. Lack of folic acid may affect the child's development in the mother's womb. However, you have to make sure that you are picking fresh vegetables. You also have to wash these thoroughly to get rid of toxoplasmosis, a substance that comes from contaminated soil.

Meanwhile, it is alright to include meat dishes. Just make sure that they are well-cooked. Uncooked meat dishes such as sushi and many rare meats may also contain toxoplasmosis and salmonella. If you prefer to include deli meats such as hot dogs, you have to see to it that they are cooked properly at about 165 degrees. For safer results, deli meats should be kept warm until served. In addition, you have to avoid liver because it is rich in Vitamin A. Too much of this type of vitamin can cause some negative effects on the pregnancy. Meat spread is not good for the pregnant woman's health as well.

Other foods that should not be included in the menu are those that contain soft cheese, unpasteurized milk, and raw eggs. Soft cheese and unpasteurized milk may possess harmful bacteria while raw eggs have potential exposure to salmonella. Some of the foods that contain raw eggs are mayonnaise, custards, and homemade ice creams. When it comes to beverages, you should avoid those having too high caffeine content. It is also not advisable to include any alcoholic drink in the menu. Instead, you have to put fresh juice, milk, and plenty of water along with the baby shower foods. By avoiding all the mentioned harmful foods and drinks, you can be assured that you will be delivering a healthy baby shower to your mom-to-be client.
