Famous autographs and sentimental autographs

by Mick Hockenhall

Chasing after autographs is something that has been done for years and by all sorts of people. The act of collecting autographs is actually called philography. It is one of the oldest forms of collecting. From historians who treasure signatures of famous people from our past, to young girls who race around the streets chasing boy bands, original autographs are sought after, prized, and treasured, and in many cases valuable pieces.

For some people the value of an autograph is purely sentimental. Maybe a girl managed to get her favourite music artist to sign her t-shirt at a concert when she was a teenager. The band could have been a short lived flash in the pan, but the t-shirt is something to hold on to, pass down to her own daughter one day and with it, celebrate the joys of growing up, and you never know it really could be valuable one day. Whenever someone of import dies, their autograph value goes up!

Neil Armstrong, the first man on the moon, stopped signing autographs several years ago, so his signature is one of the most valuable. By far though, the most valuable signature is that of Willian Shakespeare, a combination of there being only six original signatures in existence, and the fact that he is one of the most famous English writers in all of history.

It is always amusing watching winners or even participants of a reality TV show excitingly singing autographs for people who have become crazed fans overnight. These autographs are not likely to be worth much but it is all very exciting at the time. It is the autographs of more established famous people that are valued, and it is of course a great power trip for them to withhold their signature.

People will continue to collect, buy, sell, and trade for original autographs. Meeting celebrities and getting them to sign something is a thrilling experience, and as long as fans seek after that experience, there will be a market for autographs. Whether they are held on to as memories, or sold later in life for large sums of money, it is something we as a society will continue to value.
