Are You Having a Boy or a Girl?

by Gina Asterella

When women found themselves pregnant, they will start to guess 'will I have a boy or a girl?' Medically, the only way to find out whether your baby will be a girl or a boy is to have an ultrasound performed sometime after the 20th week of pregnancy. Or you just can simply wait until your baby is born and check for yourself. Well somehow, the guessing game of baby's sex when women are being pregnant is kind of every woman cannot avoid. There is no question stirs more curiosity than wondering whether your baby will be a boy or a girl. Wondering about the gender of a child is something every expectant parent does, with some clearly more curious than others.

Do not be surprised if you hear the magical techniques to guess the sex of the baby, over the years have developed many myths about how to find out the sex of the baby. You've heard one of them.

Your mother or your granny or your friends may have said this old wives tales. The tales can be started from the following statements: (1) if you are carrying high, it's a boy, or if you're carrying low it's a girl. (2) Has your hair become thinner and dull or full-bodied and glossy? Thin and dull says girl, gorgeous and glossy says a boy. (3) If you are carrying extra weight at the front, then you're having a boy, but if you are carrying extra weight on your bum and hips, then you have been carrying a girl. (4) If you look in the mirror at your breasts, which one is larger? If it's the right one, you're carrying a boy and for a larger left breast, then it's a girl. (5) What does your belly look like? does it look like a basketball or a watermelon? Because if it looks more like a basketball, then old wives say boy, but if it more resembles a watermelon then it's a girl.

Many medical experts say most if not all of prediction above spring from myth and not fact. Most of them are based on lore and legend that began when someone guessed the sex of a baby correctly then passed along how they did it. Most people do not realize that any guess, using any method, will be right at least half the time. There is a good chance that no matter what method that women apply, they will be right at least half the time because fifty percent of the time it is going to be a boy and fifty percent is a girl.

Generations of doctors have wondered about whether or not any of these sex predicting tales could be true. So here are the realities of the most commonly sex guessing tales:

1. Old wives tales: If you crave sour or salty foods, it's a boy; sweets, it's a girl. Reality: it is true that doctors are not sure what causes a woman to crave certain foods during pregnancy. Yet, there is nothing about carrying a boy or a girl that would influence a woman's taste.

2. Old wives tales: attach a ring with a strand of your hair or some string. Lie down and dangle the ring over your belly. If it starts moving in circular motion, you are having a boy, or if it moves back and forth like a pendulum, then you are having a girl. Reality: There is nothing about the sex of a baby that will influence the pull of gravity.

3. Old wives tales: If the hair on your legs grows faster during pregnancy it's a boy; if it grows slower, it's a girl. Reality: Maybe the reason behind this tales is about the hormone of the baby, sadly, not enough hormones present from the baby to have such big impact to the mother.

4. Old wives tales: If you are carrying low, it's a boy, or if you're carrying high it's a girl. Reality: many factors go into how women look when they are pregnant, including the age of the fetus as well as their position, size, and the mother's overall body shape. If she is short waisted, for example, her pregnancy may look different from a woman who is long waisted. So nothing about the shape has to do with the sex of baby.

What does really work then?

A few medical tests can reveal the sex of your baby. Doctors say it's unethical to use them solely for sex determination. However, if you are having the tests for other reasons, they can also clue you in on the baby's sex.

You can do the following tests to get the clues of your baby's sex prediction.

1.Ultrasound test.

An electronic wand is passed over the belly, allowing radio waves to relay live picture of your baby to a computer screen. It is usually conducted to check for growth and placement.

2.Amniocentesis test.

It involves inserting a needle into the amniotic fluid, a liquid that surrounds your baby in the womb. Normally used to test for genetic factors linked to disease, sex can also be revealed. This test is 100 percent accurate but it is invasive and carries some risks, including the worst thing 'miscarriage'. That is why it should never be done for the sole purpose of sex prediction.

3. Chorioconic villus sampling or CVS test.

The test extracts sample cells from the membrane that surrounds the embryo, and it also can verify baby's sex. Again, it is used only when there is clear risk of genetic abnormality and would be extremely accurate in determining gender but never ever performed for that sex prediction.

4. DNA blood or urine test.

This test is accurate and greatly expensive. It is a kind of wasting money for something unnecessary. However it is up to you.
