It's Time For Change

by Castulo Zane

The time for marijuana laws to change has come. The current laws are outdated. They are not effective. They punish harmless members of society by criminalizing them. They cost society much more than they save. The money spent on enforcement could be more wisely spent elsewhere.

The majority of the population in both Canada and the US supports either decriminlization of legalization. Many US states have passed medical marijuana laws that permit medical use of the plant. In both Canada and the US law enforcement officials have made marijuana enforcement a low priority.

More and more often, local politicians are coming out against prohibition. The frontline effects of prohibition are evident to these people. They are also largely responsible for the actual policing costs. They see the folly of spending increasingly scarce tax resources on a pointless battle.

It is said that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over while expecting different results. This is what our elected officals have been doing. Since marijuana was criminalized it has become cheaper, more widely used and more potent. That was never the goal. And yet, we keep spending money on prohibition. That's textbook insanity.

It is possible that the policy was simply ill-conceived in the beginning. With time, however, self-serving interests in prohibition have developed. Tough on crime politicians benefit by demonizing marijuana. Law enforcement budgets have benefited from the war on drugs. And, whether it is an outright conspiracy or not, the liquor industry benefits from marijuana prohibition.

One other group reaped a huge benefit as prohibition matured and usage increased. Organized crime made millions and billions. Not surprisingly, along with the crime came violence.

While criminals, corporations, law enforcement and politicians reaped the benefits of prohibition, many ordinary citizens were hurt. A small amount of marijuana could lead to a criminal record. A criminal record can hamper job prospects and travel. The incarceration of millions for marijuana offenses, however, is the worst thing.

The time has come to admit that marijuana prohibition is beneficial to the wrong people while it punishes good people. The policy has been ineffective. The harm done by the plant is miniscule compared to the harm wrought by prohibition. When you consider that prohibition has enriched criminals, increased violence, reduced price, increased usage, increased potency and wasted billions of tax dollars that could have been used elsewhere, it is time to repeal prohibition. Perhaps most important, from a democratic point of view, the majority of responsible adults want a repeal of prohibition. It is time to act now.Now is the time to act
