How Bingo has endured in the Twenty-first Century

by Carry T Simons

Bingo is one of those things that everyone knows about these days. It's actually been around in Europe for more than five hundred years in some form or another, and it's popular across all kinds of countries too. The UK is one of the popular hubs of this form of gambling, but believe it or not, there was a time not so long back where it seemed like bingo might die out. Here are some of the things that have changed recently that helped to turn these fortunes around.

The internet has changed a lot about the way we do things. It's meant that shopping has been revolutionised, and that marketing and socialising are all shaken up too. People look to the internet for entertainment on a scale that hasn't been seen before. While young people like interactive games that immerse them in a virtual experience, more mature people like things that are familiar and easy to dip into, while having an exciting purpose. By chance, bingo fits the bill perfectly. You can pick up and play without any need to learn new skills, and when you win you get real cash transferred straight to your bank account, so you get a sense of achievement from it too.

Bingo still had an image problem when it entered the new millennium. Over the years it had become inextricably associated with elderly people, and that meant young people weren't interested in giving it a try. Thanks to some revamping of venues, and a push to appeal to younger players, bingo coaxed in young women who wanted an alternative fun night out, and has grown in popularity from there.

There's the odd change that you might not notice unless you're a seasoned player. Traditionally people engage in bingo lingo, which means calling out set lines and getting set responses when a particular number is drawn. Some of these dated so far back that no one knew what they meant any more, so they've shifted to things like 'vindaloo - fifty-two' instead.

So that's how we've held onto bingo into the new millennium. It actually seems to be growing in popularity all the time, so it's not going anywhere in the near future.
