Magnetic Coils And How To Make Them

by Genevieve Petty

Anytime electric current power goes through a wire, it usually creates a magnetic field. If this happens in a single wire, the field created is usually not that powerful. Creating magnetic coils helps to concentrate the fields together. Every wire in the coil helps in contributing its share of magnetism until a very powerful magnet is made.

The first step will be coming up with the core of your magnet. Ideally, a nail or any cylindrical object that is a good conductor can be used. It is still possible to use a thin paper as the core or some other bad conductor but it will not result in strong magnetism.

After this, you should then wrap the wires around the core. When doing this, you should ensure that you have left at least six inches of wire hanging at the end of the core in such a manner that you will wrap it all around to the other side. For best results, you should keep the coils as close together as possible.

Making sure your strips are firmly affixed on the core is important. You can use glue or tape to make sure that you have achieved this. After this, cutting of the wires from the pool is important. However, the hanging six inch margin should be maintained. It will be needed for the conduction process.

The second last step is to remove the plastic cover on the hanging parts on both sides. You can do this easily by burning it with a flame. After you have burned it, you can then conveniently pull it off using a clothe. Another approach would be ripping the plastic jacket off by use of pliers of pincers.

The very last step in the entire process of making your magnetic coils is the introduction of the electric current. Any source of current can work just fine. For instance you can decide to use a lantern battery and attach both ends of the coil to it. If you test it, it should now be a complete magnet
