Great Ways To Improve Your Photography Skills

by Allison Maggie Sanchez

Photography is beautiful art, and it is a good way to help reduce your stress. If you feel comforted by the act of framing and shooting unique images, you may also have the ability to relax yourself when enjoying photography. A good photograph can speak volumes to its viewers.

One way to make your photos stand out when capturing landscapes or large buildings is to place a person within the frame as a means of showing scale. If someone is looking at the photos and do not know how large it is, it might be hard for them to realize it without some sort of scale to judge by.

Keep in mind that photographing people's emotions goes well past a simple smile. Your photographs will be much more enlightening and revealing if your subjects are captured while expressing themselves naturally. There are some really famous photos such as: "The Migrant Mother", it is a photo of a family during the depression that was homeless, or think of some of the images of the Vietnam War. The important part to remember is that it requires real emotions in pictures to bring out real emotions in their memories. A fake smile may look cute, but that's usually all it is.

There are many free or low-priced photo editing programs that can be used to touch up or enhance your photos. Even professional photographers improve their pictures digitally. It is easy to make red eyes disappear and to play with brightness and colors to give a different atmosphere to your picture. Oftentimes a photograph can change from being "so so" to "oh my goodness"! with a few minor touch ups.

Being familiar with your camera will have you shooting the best photos possible. Take some time out of your schedule to study your camera.

A silhouette can look lovely in any picture. Of course the classic silhouette uses the sunset as a backdrop; however, there are other ways to get the same effect. If the difference in lighting between the subject and background is significant, with the background being brighter, it will create a silhouette. To create a perfect silhouette, you can either use a off camera flash in back of the subject or the subject can be placed by a window that is bright. Always remember that many people consider the outline of their body to be unflattering, so don't focus on that unless it's what you're subject wants.

Use people as the subjects for your photos. Ask permission before photographing anyone. If you are on a vacation and taking tons of photos, you can look back at them later and reminisce about particular events and times that are memorable. Many times the people in the photos do not seem particularly important or noticeable at the time you snap the picture, the reason you frame the shot to begin with will be clear when you look back at them. Look for candid pictures and casual clothing.

Some good advice is to be sure to actively search out other photographers, and look at their work for inspiration. You will stimulate your creativity and reach out for new ways a moment can be captured by seeing some of the methods other photographers have used.

In order for your photography skills to get better, you need to practice more. Digital photography has brought many new options to photographers who previously might have been unwilling to give it a shot. This will give you the freedom to take as many pictures as you want without worrying about how much it is going to cost to develop and print all your pictures.

Everyone enjoys looking at photos, even if they didn't take the picture themselves. By taking pictures, you can capture sights the world may not have otherwise seen. Photography is a wonderful and fulfilling hobby to engage in. As aforementioned, sharing your photographs is also a good way to decrease your stress levels and find joy in the little things in life.
