Important Reasons Toddlers Must Go Through A Time Of Terrible Twos

It is easy to be nostalgic and think back to the day the wrapped bundle came home. The nursery was ready, the smell of baby powder filled the air. The gentle coos and sighs heard over the monitor made a smile come to the lips of parents. Then, the first word was uttered, followed by crawling and walking. Yet, the sweet memories begin to fade as the angelic child begins the transformation into a terrible two.
From as far back as parents have been parenting, the transformation of their sweet natured child into a raving ball of anger, has challenged every one. Yet, this change is a necessary step for all children to begin their maturation. Rather than remain frustrated, parents can learn to embrace this challenging time.
The key to understanding this stage is to realize that an important part of child development is occurring. Around 18 months, children become aware of their own opinions. They begin to acknowledge that they do not want to do what their adult wants them to. While it may appear willful, the independent thoughts bursting from the mouth of babes is a natural progression.
This time frame is fraught with a force of will known as oppositional behavior. The child willfully looks at the adult and does exactly opposite of what they were instructed to do. A common scene found around the world is an adult asking a child to do something and the response being a resounding "No!". At best, this situation is aggravating, but there is comfort in knowing there is a reason for the response.
A challenge that can occur outside of the child, is the effect of this stage on a marriage or relationship. Both parties involved should realize that the defiant behavior is not a reflection of poor parenting. Every parent must go through this phase. Rather than argue or cast blame, embracing the changes and supporting one another is key.
Luckily, this development stage occurs with both boys and girls. Both genders are equally obnoxious in their behaviors. In fact, crying, kicking, screaming and all out temper tantrums are common. Understanding that these responses are due to a lack of vocabulary can help calm parental nerves. If the children could speak full sentences, the result would be less dramatic.
This stage is all about learning self control and self reliance. If a parent has ever watched a group of two-year-olds, they often witness arguing over toys. This phase starts with the awareness of self. So, a child not wanting to share is not a reflection of poor upbringing, but a reflection of the newly acquired knowledge of "mine". Given gentle guidance, they will begin to understand the need for sharing.
One way to help manage this period of childhood is to look ahead to potential problems. By being proactive, some of the more dramatic fits may be prevented. Employing strategies such as distraction or using calming words can also prevent outbursts. Remember that this stage is temporary, every adult went through it themselves. Armed with that knowledge, there is no reason to worry about the phase of terrible two.
