5 Different Ways to Use a Butane Torch
by James Ferrante
You'd probably never guess, but one of the best hand tools on the market today for making jewellery, brazing, soldering, for plumbing and cooking, is in fact a butane torch. It might come as a surprise that a humble butane torch could be so versatile, but in the absence of electric tools, it comes up trumps every time. A butane torch is often a preferable choice over a tool which is reliant on an electrical cord because it is less restrictive.
Soldering - Some industries like automotive, aircraft, electronics and the marine industry tend to use a butane torch for soldering for repairs and maintenance jobs. This is often the best option when repairs are needed in places where access to the job is tricky or there is no electricity. By replacing the butane canister, or refilling, the torch can be used on an ongoing basis for soldering work. You can purchase special purpose butane torches which are designed for soldering and often come with special purpose attachments as well.
For Jewellery - When a butane torch is used in jewellery making, it is often called a jeweller's torch to specify its purpose. Some of the tasks it is used for include those which do not need oxygen for high temperature work, such as casting, melting ingots, fine soldering and annealing. A jeweller's torch will most often have a flame tip which is very fine, making it perfect for effecting repairs as well as creating new items.
Using a Butane Torch in Cooking - Sometimes called cooking torches or a creme brulee torch, these butane torches have started to become commonplace in the kitchen. Caramelising sugar for example, is one process they are well known for, such as in a creme brulee. They are very handy for quick jobs like melting cheese and excellent for browning various food items such as meat. They are now a popular kitchen tool and widely used to the point where some cooks wonder how they ever managed without.
Brazing with a Butane Torch - Brazing torches are butane torches which are used for brazing and they are perfect for creating strong joins between different metals, particularly if the job isn't large. With brazing, a third metal is introduced as the 'glue' to join the other two metals and butane torches can be relied upon to not become too hot and melt or warp the metals. Brazing is usually carried out using ferrous and non-ferrous metals.
Butane Torches for Plumbing - This type of butane torch is often referred to as a plumbing torch and will be the torch of choice for plumbers wanting to strip paint, use heat to shrink tubing, soldering copper fittings as well as undoing bolt and nuts which may have become rusted together. The HVAC also uses plumbing torches in a like fashion, in order to solder and braze refrigeration lines.
While ever the need for a portable heat kit remains, butane torches will be used in some form or other. Before you rush out to purchase a butane torch, check to see if you will need a specific purpose torch or if a multi-use one will do the job you have in mind.
