Kettlebell Exercises: A Guide To The History of These Fantastic Weights

by Greg Diener

When you come across a kettlebell, just their appearance tells you that they aren't your standard dumbbell or weight. That may lead you to wonder: What are kettlebells and where did they come from? Kettlebells have a longer history than you may think, and they do differ in ways that are different from dumbbells and weights. And although they may be lesser known in the USA, kettlebell exercises are, in fact, popular in other countries.

Although the exact beginning remains a bit uncertain, the kettlebell has been around since approximately 1704. Initially, they were used as counterweights with handles to weigh out goods on market scales. People started to think they were fun for other uses, and eventually they started to be used for lifting weights. The Russians calculated weight in "poods," and original kettlebells are still weighed in this increment of weight.

Then in 1948, kettlebells became a national sport in Russia. Over the years rules began implements as the sport became more popular, by the year 1985 the first national championship in kettlebells were held in Lipetsk, Russia. Among some notable groups that practice with kettlebells they include, the Russian military, the Secret Service of the United States and the FBI Counter Assault Team. These unique weights have had a big role in how famous individuals get healthy, and they have become more respected than dumbbells.

There is also thought that other cultures, like the ancient Romans and Greeks, used kettlebells as weights and for weight lifting, but this hasn't been proven. However, it is simple to grasp that a weight with a handle, unlike dumbbells, would be practical for many activities. Because of this, other cultures possibly could have used their own varieties of kettlebells.

So now when anybody inquires you "what are kettlebells? Why should I use them?" you can respond with a little blurb about specifically how they have been used for hundreds and perhaps even thousands of years. If you consider it, a weight with a handle makes just as much (if not more) sense than dumbbells do. Most gyms nowadays will maintain a kettlebell set because of the total-body workout they offer. And regardless, you can't argue with history!
