The beginnings of the G-Shock and why it's the ultimate watch, Kikuo Ibe and the 'Triple 10'
The very first G-Shock was launched in 1983 but few people know the story behind this iconic watch brand. In 1981 a team from Casio headed by Kikuo Ibe got together and developed the 'Triple 10' concept.
The 'Triple 10' was concerned with creating the ultimate watch, which could surpass the following 3 benchmarks. To have a lifespan of 10 years, be able to survive a fall from 10m and be water resistant to a depth of 10 atmospheres or 100m.
That's just what they did and in 1983 the Casio G-Shock DW-5000C-1A was released. Around 30 different versions of the DW-5000 have been released DW-5000's that were highly mud and dirt resistant and models that included sensors for temperature and pressure.
The G-Shock watch is one that has continuously evolved with each model that has been released. With each release the G-Shock series has pushed the capabilities and expectations of what watches can do a bit further. Looking back Kikuo Ibe said "Watches are thin and fragile --- that was the common sense. I wanted to challenge it". That is certainly what the DW-5000 did and what G-Shocks continue to do today.
G-Shocks are the ultimate tough watch, built to last as long as its owner. It's on the back of this and the clever use of marketing and design, in particular colour that the G-Shock has become an iconic watch.
Like all good thing this took time to achieve. During the 2 year development process Kikuo Ibe and his team went through over 200 prototypes trying to create the ultimate watch. It was worth it however and his legacy continues, with each new G-Shock model come new improvements.
The G-Shock is a truly iconic watch and it couldn't be more different from a Rolex. It changed what watches were about at the time and revolutionised the common held beliefs and views of what a watch could do.
