The Evolution Of The Sack Coat
by Paul Budde
In order to understand the evolution of the sack coat and dressing in general, it is important to look at the changes that have happened over the decades. Indeed, a lot has happened in the last one century and especially around and before and during the year 1900. These events are elaborated in below.
In looking at the evolution of the sack coat and menswear in general, it is helpful to look at the events that have shaped history over the period of time prior to the year 1900. There have been catastrophic events that have happened across Europe. So severe were these earth quakes that several hundreds of lives were lost. The other catastrophic event that happened in Europe is the underground fires in France.
It is also worth mentioning the positive things that have happened during this period of time. In terms of technology, a lot of inventions took place during this period of time. The making of the electric car is one such event that took place in the 1900. This invention has made it possible for major advances to be done in the motor industry. The other notable technological advances that took place during this time also include the work done on wireless transmission.
Indeed, menswear has undergone through many changes over the same period of time. One of the most notable pieces of apparel is the sack coat. In general, this is important to understand the factors that influenced menswear.
As opposed to what is seen today, menswear was a symbol of status and power in the society. It was therefore very important for the men to dress in a certain fashion as a way of aligning themselves with their social class.
During the 1900 and prior to that male chauvinism was a common thing. The men always wanted to show their dominance over the women. This was easily expressed through the clothing that one wore. One of the attire that was commonly associated with male dominance was the sack coat. This attire was meant to make the men more assertive in the society.
In the 1900, men adopted the sack coat over the knee length frock that was popular at the time. This was much shorter compared with the fashion that has preceded it. However, during this time, the main thing that influenced menswear was power and social status. The dress code therefore mattered a lot and defined how a person was in terms of status in the society. It is for this reason that men took this type of clothing very seriously.
