Obtaining Great Equine Riding Crops Offers Multiple Advantages

by Tony Knepper

For people in the equine world, riding crops are an every day tool used to train a horse. There are a few types of crops which are used in this sport. The usual design is not very long, and is mostly used while mounted. It is important to note that these are teaching aids used in horse riding, and are not a fashion accessory as many uninformed people seem to think.

The horse is commanded by using the reins, legs or in some cases the voice. A modern day crop is usually made out of fiberglass and it goes from thin and flexible up toward the top where it will have a head of sorts. Many times they are referred to as mushroom heads. Crops can be quite elegant if used correctly.

A crop is mainly put to use by making light contact to the skin, either in the neck or as an extension towards the back of the leg. These must never to be used as a form of animal abuse. Horses generally understand the various other commands and should not be beaten to perform an action. While training, the longer whip is used with side reins as well.

Persuaders of this kind are really only used as an aid to the rider. Novice riders should not be allowed to ride with one as it is the better experienced rider who will know just how much pressure to apply to the gentle flick of the wrist. The hunting whip is in fact not to be used on a horse at all. This design has a hook on it, which is usually used to open fences from on top of the mount without having to dismount.

Various disciplines require different crops or whips. The short regular type is used in jumping and equitation. There is no specific length but generally the shorter the whip the more indication that the rider can do his or her job on top of the horse properly.

Deciding on using a crop or whip must be done carefully. Not many young or untrained riders are able to do well with this tool. It must always be kept in mind that the horse should at no time be hurt when using it. Remember that anger is brought out of fear, so always keep it under control and never hit first.

There will be times when a horse is being hard headed and stubborn, but with gentle use of the legs and voice, it is often totally unnecessary to hit. Bare in mind that these animals also feel pain through their skin. They can feel a fly on them, so whenever reprimanding or persuading, always look for other options first. The crop should be your last resort.

Often, the horse may be a little out of sorts and a gentle reminder can be used via a crop or a whip. Always bare in mind as well, that one should never ever take a crop to a horse while on the ground and holding it by a lead rein. If you are unsure on how to correctly use the various riding crops available, then seek advice from someone with more knowledge and experience.
