During the last decade hookahs have started gaining a great deal of recognition in the U.S. In simple terms, a hookah bar is a business establishment where customers share shisha tobacco by using a smoking device known as a "hookah". One can readily get hookah bars near colleges and universities and in very populated urban areas.

The origin of hookah can be traced back to 500 years in what was then referred to as Subcontinent. Legend has it the hookah was first designed in 1588 by a Persian physician in the Indian court. The Indians referred to the device as a "huqqa", a title which has remained with it through history, even though it is referred to as many other names for example "nargile," "shisha," and "hubble-bubble" to name a few.
The first hookah was made from coconut shells and it was not like the hookahs that are manufactured in the modern day, but the purpose of that hookah was same of purifying smoke by passing it through water. Here are the key components of a hookah:
1. Bowl - where the tobacco is kept.
2. Body - tobacco smoke reaches the water basin after passing through the body.
3. Water Basin - has the water to purify and cool the smoke. After purifying the smoke remains in a chamber over the water.
4. Hose - the smoker inhales the smoke from the chamber over the water using a hose. The hose can be up to several meters long.
The above mechanism gives the smoker soothing and fragrant smoke.
