Over the last decade hookahs have started gaining a great deal of recognition in the U.S. To explain it simply a hookah bar is the same as cocktail bar, but in a hookah bar you'll find hookah instead of cocktails. There are plenty of Hookah bars in towns in the U.S.
A Look at The History
The source of hookah can be traced back to five centuries in what was then called the Subcontinent. Hookah bars are largely linked to the middle east since it was the origin of hookah and the area from where hookah gained a lot of popularity. Hookah bars in the middle east became the place for the elite to hang out and smoke hookah.
In a Hookah Bar
In the more cultural regions, the lounges usually appear like their roots more carefully, often managed by people of Arab descent, furnished and embellished with a Middle Eastern or Indian design. A few are simple, and may not offer other items. But some multifunctional bars offer snack foods, coffee and sodas too. A small bar usually does not have a liquor license and so they don't serve alcohol. The larger bars, however, have a liquor license and they serve a number of cocktails along with wine and beer. Smaller hookah bars generally have music systems, but the larger bars have belly dancers, live DJs and the atmosphere appears to be a lot more like a night club.
Near college campuses, hookah bars tend to be more casual with a wide mix of customers, which includes college students of course. The trend has become common as a safer replacement for other sorts of smoking. Hookah bars do well around colleges as college life is a time to try out new things and enjoy the freedom of life. The cities which are well-known for having many secondary education institutions in the U.S. have noticed a great boost in the popularity of hookah bars.
So What is A Hookah
Now you must be thinking what a hookah is? What is so special about this device that it has become popular all around the world. A Persian physician, Abul-Fath-Gilani made the hookah in 1588. He was in India in those days. At the time it was invented, it was given the name of "huqqa". The word hookah comes from the very same Indian word "huqqa".
The first hookah was made of coconut shells and it was nothing like the hookahs that are produced in the present day, but the function of that hookah was same of purifying smoke by passing it through water. The anatomy of the hookah has 4 main components:
1. Bowl - where the tobacco is kept.
2. Body - tobacco smoke gets to the water basin after moving through the body.
3. Water Basin - has the water to purify and cool the smoke. After purifying the smoke remains in a chamber over the water.
4. Hose - the smoker puffs on the hose to breathe in smoke from the holding chamber where it is kept after purification. Ordinarily a hose is about one to two meters long.
The above mechanism provides the smoker soothing and fragrant smoke.
A senior customer of a popular hookah business in turkey said:
"The important thing is not what you put in the pipe, but who is with you when you're smoking. It's a whole experience. In a caf like this one, you find good people, the old people, the intriguing people. As long as there is a need for company and friendship, as long as people wish to stop and think, there will be hookah bars."
