Why Many People Choose Station Clocks

by Lela Perkins

Wind back time a few decades and train travel was more prevalent than today. The old saying that the railroads shrunk the country is quite true. Train journeys were scheduled against timetables. To keep the passengers aware of how much longer they could expect to wait for their train, station clocks were strategically sited.

These clocks had to be positioned so that they could be read from a variety of angles. To help with this many platform clocks were multi-faced, and they have to be easily read. More often than not the clock faces would be a pale background, whilst the hands and numerals would be a much darker colour. This contrast greatly assisted with legibility.

Accuracy and reliability were the ultimate aims for these clocks. They would often be so reliable that the public would prefer to believe these railroad timepieces, rather than their own pocket watches. The largest railroad hubs would often employ someone whose sole responsibility was to maintain these timepieces.

People would also use them as landmarks, for instance if they were meeting someone at a strange place. Everyone could guarantee that these timepieces could be found at railroad depots, and that they could be easily seen from a distance. Think of the old-time black and white movies, and how noticeable any railroad time piece appears as the main characters arranged to meet beneath it.

For major network hubs, these chronometers were not just confined to the platforms and concourses. Quite often a clock-tower would also be built. The clock-faces would be visible across town, some were even illuminated at night. All too soon people's lives were subject to the progress of time.

Despite there being so much technology these days people will still use these items as a meeting place, or as a way point when giving directions. Many people find these familiar landmarks very comforting. They are something that individuals have grown up alongside, and would be missed were they no longer there.

As people get on with their lives, they often move away from the area where they grew up. Many will take photographs of familiar places before they leave, after all these locations probably played a big part in their lives. Besides photographs to reminisce over, more and more people are buying reproduction vintage railroad timepieces. Initially the selection was very small, but more designs are becoming available.

Due to their design and construction, they are suitable for use either indoors or outdoors. They are powered by batteries, but maintain their accuracy through quartz movements. They do add a certain amount of elegance and style wherever they are placed.

The main area of usage seems to be in people's gardens. Thanks to the materials used in their construction they do not rust or fade, as they mark time in all weathers. You can rest assured that in a couple of years this timepiece will still be looking as good, and keeping good time.

A lot of designs can be read from either side as they have two faces. Which simplifies things within the garden environment. Another benefit is the size of the face, it is big enough to be read from distance. These reproduction station clocks now grace many a garden around the world, as people have taken some of their childhood memories with them.
