How To Care For Teak Garden Furniture
by David Green
Teak furniture is the most excellent quality furniture possible. Teak outdoor furniture is also easy to maintain. Teak has unique properties which make furniture made from teak excellent for use outside. Teak garden furniture requires only a little care or maintenance to last a long time.
Teak wood is one of the more costly woods. Despite this, you can conclude that outdoor teak furniture is a good investment on account of its longevity.
You should clean up your teak at least once a year to remove any dust or dirt. Easiest way is to use a garden hose under low pressure to wash the dirt away. Following that, using a soft bristled brush, rub the teak wood delicately with a mixture of warm water, dishwashing liquid, and a few tablespoons of bleach. If you use too much bleach will lighten the wood so adding bleach is up to your judgement. Afterwards, rinse once more using clean water. Dry the surface with a towel or large rag afterwards.
Teak garden furniture that is kept outdoors will by nature begin to gradually change color from the golden honey tone of fresh wood to be a silver-gray patina. The process of teak furniture fading to gray patina is harmless and merely cosmetic. The process does not reduce the durability of your teak patio furniture.
Some people like the golden honey color of brand new teak and buy teak oil as a way to keep this tone. But teak oil is going to cause more trouble because it has to be retreated every three months from the time you start using it. Oils could also improve the probability for mildew to form. A better idea is to use teak sealer annually after a good cleaning of your teak garden furniture in order to try to maintain the golden honey tone.
You may decide to use a furniture cover for your teak furniture, especially in the winter months or if you live in a location that gets a lot of dust. If you choose to use covers, be sure to get a furniture cover made from a breathable material. Do not get a plastic cover which is going to trap humidity. This increases the possibility of mold and mildew growing on your furniture.
Stubborn stains such as coffee can get taken care of with a light sanding of the outer layer of the teak outdoor furniture. Begin with a grade medium paper and after that finish with a fine grade sandpaper to get a smooth outer finish. Sanding like this is another method of bringing out the golden glow of teakwood as you are exposing a new layer of teak wood which is permeated with oil from the wood.
No matter if your furniture is a teak steamer or a teak bistro set, a bit of maintenance will go far.
So you can see, your outdoor teak furniture should last many years with not even much maintenance on your part. Because it will last for so long, teak wood is preferred to other varieties of hardwood. You should enjoy knowing that a teak dining set you get now will be enjoyed by your family in the future.
